Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82.
His death was announced in a brief statement issued on Sunday by his former Special Adviser, Garba Shehu.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London,” the statement read.
“May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu added.
Details surrounding the cause of death remain undisclosed as of the time of this report. Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, had spent his later years mostly in retirement and out of public view.
Tributes have begun to pour in from political leaders and citizens across the country, with many reflecting on his decades-long influence on Nigeria’s political landscape.
