Italian football icon Roberto Baggio was hospitalized on Thursday following an attack by armed assailants who robbed him at his home.
The incident occurred while he was watching Italy’s one-nil loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 tournament with his family.
According to reports from Italian media, Baggio confronted the intruders at his villa near Vicenza in northern Italy around 10 pm local time.
During the confrontation, he was struck on the head with the butt of a gun. The attackers then locked Baggio, aged 57, and his family in a room while they stole jewelry, watches, and cash.
After the robbers fled, Baggio freed himself and alerted the authorities. He was subsequently taken to the hospital where he received stitches for his head injury.
Fortunately, his family members were unharmed during the ordeal.
Regarded as one of the greatest players of his era, Baggio notably missed a crucial penalty in the 1994 World Cup final against Brazil.
He also made history by playing and scoring in three World Cup tournaments, achieving the feat first for Italy during the 1998 competition in France.
