FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Argentina over incidents following their 2026 FIFA World Cup final defeat to Spain and other events during the tournament.

The investigation follows altercations involving Argentina players, coaching staff and Spain players after the final whistle at the New York New Jersey Stadium, where Spain secured a 1-0 victory.

FIFA had earlier appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate the incidents. Following the prosecutor’s recommendation, proceedings have now been opened against several individuals.

Argentina defender Nahuel Molina is being investigated on two counts of alleged assault, while midfielder Leandro Paredes faces three counts. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala is also facing one count of alleged assault under Article 14 of FIFA’s disciplinary code.

Molina faces an additional allegation of unsporting behaviour.

Argentina’s Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are also under investigation over allegations of unsporting conduct.
