The Federal Government has called on stakeholders and partners to enhance the integration of diagnostic services into Nigeria’s healthcare system. This initiative aims to leverage advanced technologies and maximize the contributions of diagnostic professionals to improve healthcare delivery across the country.
The call was made during the National Summit on Integrated Diagnostic Services held in Abuja, where the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized the critical role of diagnostics in achieving universal health coverage.
Minister Highlights Benefits of Integration
Dr. Alausa stressed that integrating diagnostic services is essential for improving efficiency, eliminating duplication, and optimizing resource utilization in the healthcare sector. He noted that a robust diagnostic framework would not only enhance patient care but also reduce the need for medical tourism, lower healthcare costs, and conserve foreign exchange.
“By integrating diagnostic services, we can unlock the full potential of our healthcare value chains, create jobs, and improve both the economy and health outcomes for Nigerians,” Dr. Alausa stated.

Speaking on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative, Dr. Laxmikant Chavan outlined ongoing efforts to strengthen laboratory services and diagnostic networks in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of sustainable access to high-quality diagnostics to ensure equitable healthcare delivery.
“The WHO is committed to supporting Nigeria in advancing its diagnostic capabilities. Strengthening these services is crucial for achieving universal health coverage and improving the overall health system,” Dr. Chavan said.

The summit, themed “Unlocking Healthcare Value Chains and Improving Universal Health Coverage through Integrated Diagnostic Services,” brought together healthcare professionals, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss strategies for integrating diagnostics into the national healthcare framework.
