The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting national parks nationwide, emphasizing sustainable management practices to preserve them for future generations. This was made known during the official handover of Marhai National Park, Wamba, by Governor Abdullahi Sule to the Federal Government, represented by the Minister of Environment, Balarebe Abbas Lawal. The event took place at the Nasarawa State Government House in Lafia.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister lauded Nasarawa State for its role in facilitating the park’s transfer and acknowledged the park’s ecological and economic significance. He noted that the journey to elevate the park’s status began in 2011, and its realization highlights the nation’s focus on biodiversity conservation.
Governor Abdullahi Sule reaffirmed the state’s readiness to work closely with the Federal Ministry of Environment to ensure the park reaches its full potential. He called on the Conservator General to leverage Marhai’s unique resources to enhance conservation efforts.
The Conservator General expressed gratitude for the opportunity to oversee the park and assured stakeholders that cutting-edge technology would be utilized for its effective management. Meanwhile, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources appreciated the local community’s support in maintaining the park and urged ongoing collaboration to ensure its success.
Marhai National Park, situated in Wamba, is poised to serve as a sanctuary for wildlife, a site for ecological processes, and a hub for environmental education and sustainable tourism. It underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a balance between conservation and community engagement.
