The Federal Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding schools from violence and ensuring the protection of educational institutions during emergencies across Nigeria.
Speaking at the 5th commemoration of the United Nations International Day to Protect Education from Attack in Abuja, Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, emphasized the importance of protecting schools, especially in conflict-affected areas. The event, themed “Renewed Commitment to Implement and Ensure Sustainable Financing of Safe Schools in Nigeria,” aimed to raise public awareness and encourage stakeholders to allocate necessary resources for school safety.
Dr. Sununu, represented by his Special Assistant, Mrs. Claris Ujah, highlighted that attacks on education not only deprive students of their right to quality learning but also prevent teachers from delivering effective instruction. These attacks, particularly prevalent in regions experiencing conflict, pose serious threats to the education system.
During the event, Education Manager at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Dr. Jutaro Sakamoto, commended the government’s efforts to protect schools and pledged continued support in addressing the issue of violence against educational institutions.
Additionally, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, represented by the National Coordinator of the Digital Resource Centre, Prof. Bashir Galadanci, underscored the need for actionable strategies to secure the safety of schools, teachers, and students.
The International Day to Protect Education from Attack serves as a crucial platform to raise awareness, inspire action, and promote sustainable peace by ensuring the protection of education across the country.
