The Federal Government has deployed over 10,000 Agro Rangers across 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to enhance food security and safeguard agricultural investments.
The initiative, led by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), aims to provide security for farmers and farmlands, addressing the escalating challenges of food production and rising inflation.
Special Assistant to the President on social media, Olusegun Dada announced the deployment, emphasizing the critical role of the Agro Rangers in protecting farmers, who have increasingly become targets of violent attacks.
He highlighted that the Agro Rangers will not only safeguard farmlands but also mediate in conflicts between farmers and herders, thereby preventing the destruction of agricultural lands.
Dada further stated that the government’s focus on agriculture as a cornerstone of national development is reinforced by the imminent arrival of over 5,000 pieces of sophisticated farming equipment. These tools will be distributed to farmers to support the cultivation of over 10 million hectares of land, aligning with the administration’s ambitious goals to boost food production and curb the ongoing food inflation crisis.
“As part of ongoing efforts to enhance food security in the Northern region and other parts of the country, the FG, through the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), has deployed over 10,000 Agro Rangers across 19 states and the FCT,” Dada said.
“The Agro Rangers will, among other things, safeguard farmlands, protect farmers from escalating attacks, mediate conflicts between farmers and herders, and prevent malicious destruction of farmlands.”
Dada acknowledged that while food inflation is influenced by various factors, including global economic conditions, the government’s efforts to tackle insecurity in the agricultural sector are crucial for stabilizing the food supply and ensuring long-term food security in Nigeria.
This collaboration between the NSCDC and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is expected to significantly mitigate one of the major challenges faced by farmers across the country.
