The Federal Government has announced Thursday, May 1, 2025, as a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Workers’ Day celebration. The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in an official statement released on Tuesday.
The Minister commended Nigerian workers for their unwavering diligence, sacrifice, and contributions to the nation’s internal and external growth. He emphasized the critical role workers play in building the country’s economy and maintaining its respected position among the international community.
“There is dignity in labour; the dedication and commitment to the work we do is vital to nation-building,” Tunji-Ojo stated. He urged workers to embrace a culture of innovation and increased productivity, which he noted would enhance governance and ensure citizens benefit maximally from the nation’s resources.
The Minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to the security of lives and property across Nigeria, assuring both citizens and foreigners of their safety under the current administration. He encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful, emphasizing President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to fulfilling his Renewed Hope Agenda.
Workers’ Day, observed annually on May 1, is a global celebration of laborers and the working class. In Nigeria, the day typically features parades, speeches, and events organized by labor unions to highlight workers’ rights and contributions to national development.
The full statement, signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, reaffirmed the government’s appreciation for the workforce and called for continued peace as a driver of industrialization and economic growth.
