FCT Minister, Wike Vows to Demolish Illegal Buildings in Abuja

The newly sworn-in Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike has assumed office with a pledge to restore the city’s master plan by demolishing all illegal buildings and structures in the territory.

Wike, who made this known at his maiden news conference, said land allottees who have been given certificates of occupancy but failed to develop would lose their lands to give way to those ready to build.

As the new sheriff in town, he said: “It is not going to be business as usual. Those distorting Abuja Master Plan: if you build where you are not supposed to, the building will go down.

The newly sworn-in minister, while sounding a note of warning to landlords of properties distorting the master plan of Abuja, said he doesn’t care who the owners of such houses are and that they must surely go down.

“All those people who are distorting the master plan of Abuja, too bad. If you know you’ve built where you’re not supposed to build, it will go down,” Wike said.

The former governor of Rivers State further said that for anyone who has developed where they are not supposed to, even if the culprit is a minister or an ambassador, “your house must go down”.

“Those who have taken over the green areas to build, sorry, our parks must come back, the green areas must come back. If you hate green, you must hate yourself,” Wike said.

“So, if you know you have anybody involved that has taken over the green areas or has taken over the parks to where you now do restaurants, no, we will not accept that. Sorry.

“If your father has done that, sorry. If your mother has done that, sorry. There’s nothing I can do. It will go down. There is refuse everywhere. Those who are paid for refuse collection, what are they doing?”

Wike also warned land speculators that a new sheriff is in town, and for those doing land marketing, the period for that is over.

He said those who have been given CofO (certificate of occupancy) and failed to develop and have become land speculators, the land is gone, and he will revoke it.
