The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a strong warning that no Nigerian politician is above the law, with Chairman Ola Olukoyede declaring that all corrupt public officials will face prosecution regardless of political affiliation. The anti-graft czar made the declaration during an exclusive interview on Channels Television, where he revealed the agency secured 3,175 convictions and recovered N156 billion in looted funds over the past year.
Olukoyede pushed back against allegations of political bias, stating: “When we discover you’ve stolen money, you must answer – whether you’re in APC, PDP, Labour Party or NNPP. Our investigations and prosecutions speak for themselves – we’ve gone after powerful figures in the ruling party just as we’ve pursued opposition members.” The EFCC boss emphasized that the commission’s mandate remains strictly evidence-based, noting that individuals often join political parties only after coming under investigation in attempts to shield themselves.
The tough-talking chairman revealed that several high-profile cases involving top politicians from multiple parties are currently under investigation, promising that the EFCC will not relent in its fight against graft. “Nigerians should judge us by our record – 3,175 convictions and N156 billion recovered don’t lie,” Olukoyede stated, while urging citizens to continue supporting the anti-corruption war. His comments come amid growing public skepticism about the neutrality of anti-graft agencies, particularly regarding politically-exposed persons.
EFCC is preparing to unveil new corruption charges against several serving and former public officers in coming weeks, signaling an intensified clampdown on financial crimes. The commission’s renewed vigor follows President Tinubu’s recent directive for anti-corruption agencies to operate without fear or favor in their constitutional duties.
