Cross River, Edo Back Tinubu’s Emergency Rule in Rivers, Disown South-South Governors’ Forum

Date:

Acting Governor Peter Odey Aligns with Federal Government’s Decision

The Acting Governor of Cross River State, Peter Odey, has distanced himself from the South-South Governors’ Forum’s opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. Odey clarified that Cross River State was neither consulted nor involved in the forum’s position, affirming his administration’s full support for the President’s decision.

In a statement issued by his Press Secretary, Fred Abua, Odey emphasized that the emergency rule was a necessary step to ensure national security, peace, and stability.

“The position of the South-South Governors’ Forum does not reflect the views of the Government of Cross River State. We fully align with the decision of Mr. President, taken in the best interest of national security, peace, and stability,” Odey stated.

He further added, “Every responsible government must prioritize the protection of lives and property. Where circumstances necessitate decisive action, such measures should be supported for the greater good of our democracy and national unity. Cross River State remains committed to upholding constitutional governance and will continue to collaborate with the Federal Government in ensuring peace, security, and stability across the country.”

Edo State Also Distances Itself

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, had earlier disassociated himself from the South-South Governors’ Forum’s rejection of the emergency rule. Okpebholo’s stance aligns with Cross River State’s position, further isolating the forum’s chairman, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, who had criticized the President’s decision.

Tinubu’s Decision Follows Escalating Crisis

President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State came after months of political turmoil and the recent bombing of an oil pipeline, which threatened national security and economic stability. As part of the emergency measures, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly were suspended for six months.

South-South Governors’ Forum Opposes Move

The South-South Governors’ Forum, led by Governor Douye Diri, had condemned the emergency rule, arguing that the situation in Rivers State did not meet the constitutional threshold for such a declaration. Diri cited Section 305(3) of the Nigerian Constitution, which outlines specific conditions for declaring a state of emergency, including war, external aggression, or a breakdown of public order threatening national security.

Diri also noted that the Constitution provides clear procedures for removing a governor and deputy governor under Section 188, which he claimed were not followed in this case.

“As a path forward to reduce tensions and establish a foundation for enduring peace, the South-South Governors’ Forum proposes the rescission of the State of Emergency,” Diri stated.

Cross River, Edo Stand Firm

Despite the forum’s opposition, Cross River and Edo States have thrown their weight behind the Federal Government’s decision, emphasizing the need for decisive action to restore peace and stability in Rivers State. Both states have reiterated their commitment to constitutional governance and collaboration with the Federal Government to address security challenges.

As the situation unfolds, the divide within the South-South Governors’ Forum highlights the complexity of the crisis in Rivers State and the broader implications for regional and national stability.
