A Kuje Magistrate Court has granted bail to Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North and South, who is facing charges of assault, abuse of office, and threat to life.
Hon. Ikwechegh was arraigned for allegedly assaulting Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya outside his Abuja residence.
Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id, ruling on Wednesday, granted bail to the lawmaker in the sum of N500,000, requiring two sureties in like amount.
The court stipulated that the sureties must reside within its jurisdiction and provide utility bills to confirm their address.
The case has been adjourned to November 8 for trial.
This development follows a widely circulated video showing Hon. Ikwechegh allegedly slapping Abuwatseya and making threats, which led to public backlash and a subsequent apology from the lawmaker.
