The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially stated that it is contemplating rescheduling the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, initially planned for Morocco, to January 2026.
CAF’s General Secretary, Mr. Veron Mosengo-Omba, told newsmen that the continental footballing body could shift the date because of the timing of FIFA’s new 32-team Club World Cup in June and July next year.
Mr. Mosengo-Omba underscored concerns regarding player welfare, raising doubts about the practicality of players participating in both the Club World Cup and the AFCON in succession.
Originally slated for June, AFCON 2025’s timing is now under review due to the scheduling conflict with the Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13.
Mr. Mosengo-Omba assured that an update on the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco would be announced by the month’s end, hinting at the possibility of its postponement to the following year.
