Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has declared that the Labour Party (LP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) no longer exist politically in the state, following the outcome of Saturday’s by-elections which saw the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) emerge victorious.
Speaking on Sunday at Nanka during a celebration of APGA’s success, Soludo dismissed the relevance of the opposition parties, taking a swipe at former governor Peter Obi, who supported ADC candidates in the polls.
“ADC does not exist in Anambra. We showed it yesterday (Saturday). Labour Party is dead,” Soludo told cheering APGA supporters adorned in party colours and cock-logo regalia.
The governor said the ADC coalition, backed by Obi, had attempted to test its strength in the by-elections but was decisively rejected by voters. “The people spoke overwhelmingly with over 75%. APGA is our movement,” he declared.
In the senatorial race, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Emmanuel Nwachukwu of APGA as the winner for Anambra South Senatorial District with 90,408 votes. He defeated Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 19,847 votes, and ADC’s Donald Amangbo, who secured 2,889 votes. Nwachukwu replaces late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who died in July 2024.
INEC also declared APGA’s Ifeoma Azikiwe winner of the Onitsha North Constituency 1 seat in the State House of Assembly. Soludo noted that this constituency is home to Obi himself, saying the result was symbolic.
“And all of them came. The senator representing the zone came. The senator representing Anambra Central threw himself into the ring. Members of the House of Representatives threw themselves into the ring. It looked like this was an allied force. Who were they coming against? The people. But the people of Anambra spoke,” he said.
According to Soludo, APGA’s victory by about 77% in Onitsha North sent “a very emphatic statement” that both ADC and LP were “dead” in Anambra.
Soludo, a former Central Bank governor, is seeking re-election as Anambra governor under APGA in the November 8, 2025 governorship election. He recently met with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, saying he owed no apology for his over 20-year friendship with the president.
