Benue Assembly Denies Governor’s Influence In Speaker Dajoh’s Resignation, Elects Berger As Replacement

0

The Benue State House of Assembly has dismissed speculations that Governor Hyacinth Alia influenced the resignation of its Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, insisting the decision was personal and not politically induced.

Assembly spokesperson Elias Audu, speaking on The Morning Brief programme on Monday, stressed that lawmakers remain “independent-minded” and cannot be coerced into decisions.

“I’m convinced that the Speaker resigned based on personal principle. We are in a political dispensation, but if there are political undertones, there is no fighting in the Benue Assembly. Because the members are independent-minded, you can’t coerce them,” Audu stated.

Dajoh had tendered his resignation in a letter on Sunday, describing it as an act done “in good faith and in the best interest of the state.”

Audu described the move as the “collective will of members,” noting that proceedings were peaceful. “The immediate past Speaker Aondona Dajoh voluntarily resigned. He came, he saw, he conquered, he did his best for the peace and development of the state,” he said.

Following Dajoh’s exit, lawmakers at an emergency plenary presided over by Deputy Speaker Lami Ogenyi unanimously elected Honourable Berger Emberga, representing Makurdi North, as the new Speaker. Emberga, who was recently suspended along with three others over an alleged impeachment plot, pledged to work with his predecessor and other members to advance the state’s development agenda.

The Assembly has also continued to assert its independence by rejecting Governor Alia’s commissioner nominees. Last week, lawmakers turned down the nominations of Prof. Timothy Ornguga and James Dwen after four petitions were raised against Ornguga, including allegations that he lacked a primary school certificate.

Governor Alia, however, has denied involvement in the Assembly crisis, stressing that he maintains a cordial relationship with lawmakers and remains focused on Benue’s development.

NLC Rejects Plan To Raise Salaries Of Political Office Holders, Calls Move ‘Insensitive’

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to suspend its plan to increase the remuneration of political office holders, describing the move as “insensitive, unjust, and inequitable.”

RMAFC chairman Mohammed Shehu had recently disclosed that President Bola Tinubu earns ₦1.5 million monthly while ministers receive less than ₦1 million, noting that the figures have remained unchanged since 2008. He argued that the pay structure was due for review.

But in a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, NLC President Joe Ajaero warned that the proposed salary adjustment would widen the gap between civil servants and political office holders, further impoverishing ordinary Nigerians.

“The move will only succeed in deepening the growing inequality between civil servants and political office holders. It will equally deepen poverty among the generality of Nigerians, majority of whom have not only been adjudged to be multi-dimensionally poor, [but] live miserably poor,” Ajaero said.

He demanded that the current earnings of political office holders, as well as the benchmarks for the proposed review, be made public. “RMAFC should put on hold this exercise before it triggers a tsunami,” the labour leader warned.

Ajaero also criticised the commission’s justification, saying the privileges and perks already enjoyed by politicians far outweigh the official salaries, while civil servants continue to endure a wage freeze despite rising costs of living.

He recalled that the last wage review for civil servants was not more than 50 percent, while political office holders received increases of over 800 percent. He further noted that, unlike civil servants whose pay varies across states, political office holders enjoy uniform pay nationwide, with a councillor in Yobe earning the same as a councillor in Rivers State.

While acknowledging the importance of fair compensation, Ajaero insisted it must be applied equitably and across board, in line with constitutional principles.

The NLC has now formally demanded transparency on current and proposed earnings, and an immediate halt to the exercise, warning of possible nationwide consequences if the plan proceeds.

Benue Assembly Suspends Four Lawmakers Over Failed Impeachment Plot

The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended four lawmakers for six months over an alleged attempt to impeach Speaker Aondona Dajoh on Thursday night.

The suspended legislators are Alfred Berger (Makurdi North), Terna Shimawua (Kian), Cyril Ekong (Obi), and James Umoru (Apa).

Majority Leader Saater Tiseer, in a motion of urgent importance, accused the lawmakers of trying to destabilize the Assembly with what he described as an unnecessary crisis.

Following the motion, Speaker Dajoh directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to escort the suspended members out of the chambers.

In the aftermath, Dajoh appointed Audu Elias as the new spokesperson of the House, replacing Berger, who previously held the position.

Bridge Collapse On China’s Yellow River Leaves Six Dead, Ten Missing

0

Six people were killed and 10 are missing after part of a bridge under construction collapsed Friday in northwest China, state media reported.

A video published by state broadcaster CCTV showed the middle of the bridge’s arch section suddenly giving way and plunging into the waters of the Yellow River below.

The cause was a steel cable failure, state news agency Xinhua said.

The People’s Daily newspaper said 15 workers and a project manager were on-site at the time. The death toll was initially reported as seven by the newspaper, but subsequent reports put it at six.

The bridge on the Sichuan-Qinghai Railway is the world’s largest-span double-track continuous steel truss arch bridge, according to People’s Daily. It is also China’s first railway steel truss arch bridge spanning the Yellow River — the country’s second longest — the report said.

Images published on state media show the partially built bridge, its middle section missing and two giant scaffolding towers and several cranes alongside it.

Hundreds of rescue workers were mobilised for the search and rescue operation, Xinhua said.

Industrial accidents are fairly common in China due to vague regulations and lax safety standards. In December last year, 13 people went missing after a cave-in at a construction site for a major railway in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. There were no reports of survivors.

Sri Lanka Ex-President Ranil Wickremesinghe Arrested

0

Sri Lanka’s former president Ranil Wickremesinghe was arrested on Friday for allegedly misusing government funds, a senior police detective confirmed to AFP.

According to investigators, Wickremesinghe was taken into custody after being questioned over a September 2023 visit to London, where he attended a University of Wolverhampton ceremony for his wife, Maithree, while serving as head of state.

“We are producing him before the Colombo Fort magistrate,” the officer said, adding that charges were being pressed for using state resources for personal purposes.

The trip took place on Wickremesinghe’s return from Havana, where he had attended a G77 summit. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) alleged that he used public funds for his travel on what was deemed a private visit, and that the state covered expenses for his bodyguards.

Wickremesinghe, however, insisted that no state resources were used, maintaining that his wife’s travel expenses were personally covered.

He became president in July 2022, completing the remainder of Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s term after Rajapaksa resigned following mass protests over corruption and economic mismanagement.

Wickremesinghe is credited with stabilising the economy after Sri Lanka’s worst-ever financial crisis in 2022 but lost his re-election bid in September 2023.

PCN Seals 486 Medicine Premises In Niger State Over Regulatory Breaches

0

The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed 486 medicine premises in Niger State for multiple regulatory violations, including operating without licenses, engaging unqualified personnel, and the unauthorized sale of controlled drugs.

The Head of Enforcement at the PCN headquarters, Suleiman Ciroma, disclosed this on Friday while briefing journalists at the North Central Zonal Office in Minna, following a week-long enforcement exercise.

According to him, the affected premises comprise 69 pharmacies, 127 patent medicine shops, and 290 unlicensed outlets. He also confirmed that one individual was arrested for obstructing inspectors and will face prosecution.

“In total, 672 premises comprising 136 pharmacies and 536 patent medicine stores were inspected across nine local government areas—Agaie, Bida, Tafa, Chanchaga, Lapai, Paikoro, Bosso, Suleja, and Gurara,” Ciroma said.

He explained that the operation focused on assessing premises, personnel, and pharmaceutical practices to ensure compliance with professional ethics and minimum standards that guarantee safe and quality service delivery.

The enforcement team uncovered infractions such as unlicensed facilities, non-compliance with regulatory guidelines, unauthorized clinical practices, sales of controlled medicines, and illegal training of apprentices.

Ciroma stressed that licensed pharmacies and Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) can be identified by the visible display of valid licenses, urging the public to verify this as a safeguard against quackery.

He added that the nationwide enforcement exercise is part of efforts to sanitize the pharmaceutical sector, protect public health, and reduce the circulation of substandard and falsified medical products.

While commending residents for their cooperation, Ciroma assured that the PCN will sustain efforts to eliminate unqualified practitioners and illegal premises across the country.

President Tinubu Departs Japan, Heads To Brazil For State Visit

0

President Bola Tinubu departed Yokohama, Japan, on Thursday night for Brazil, where he is scheduled to begin a state visit on August 24.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President will make a stopover in Los Angeles before proceeding to Brasília, the Brazilian capital.

Tinubu began his two-nation trip on August 15, leaving Abuja with a brief stopover in Dubai, UAE, before arriving in Yokohama on August 18.

While in Japan, the President attended the opening ceremony and plenary of the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) on August 20, held bilateral meetings, and concluded his visit with an interactive session with members of the Nigerian community on Thursday night.

During the meeting, Tinubu urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to contribute their expertise and resources to the country’s growth and stability, stressing that national development could not be left to government alone.

“I am happy to listen to you. I’m happy to report that many of our people are returning home. Yes, for economic reasons, some people might decide to stay away; it’s a fundamental right of the individual, but for the economic growth and opportunity available in Nigeria, don’t stay away. Your contribution is very much needed. If you stay away, who will build it?” he asked.

He added: “If we don’t join hands and work together, then we’ve lost the hope of being the leaders we are supposed to be.”

ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike, Accuses FG of Breaking 2009 Agreement

0

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a fresh nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of reneging on its commitments under the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement and other unresolved issues affecting public universities.

ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, made the warning during a press conference at the University of Jos on Thursday, stating that lecturers have endured over two years of broken promises and government delay tactics.

He listed the key grievances to include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, outstanding salary arrears, withheld promotions, welfare of retired lecturers, and improved funding for public universities.

“The general public should also note that ASUU has written several letters to the FGN drawing its attention to the need to resolve this crisis amicably. Lamentably, the FGN has always turned a deaf ear to all our pleas,” Piwuna said.

He added that the union may have no option but to strike. “As always, it is the FGN that has consistently pushed our union to embark on a strike action, and it is clear that ASUU may have no other option than to embark on an action to press the FGN to listen to our demands and do the needful.”

The ASUU president further rejected the government’s proposed tertiary institutions staff support fund loan scheme, calling it a “trap.”

“Our members do not need loans. What we need is the implementation of agreements that will improve our purchasing power. Government is still owing us three months’ salaries, yet they are asking us to borrow money,” he said.

The union also condemned the proliferation of universities without sustainable funding, warning that the trend has weakened standards and lowered global rankings.

On pensions, Piwuna lamented that professors who served for over four decades now receive as little as ₦150,000 monthly, despite rising inflation and living costs.

ASUU announced that members will hold rallies across campuses next week to express their frustrations, ahead of a government meeting scheduled for August 28.

“Time is running out. We cannot continue to wait endlessly while the future of Nigerian universities is destroyed,” Piwuna warned.

FG Offers ₦200bn Bonds For Subscription In August 2025 Auction

0

The Federal Government has announced the offering of ₦200 billion in bonds for subscription by auction in August 2025, according to a circular posted on the Debt Management Office (DMO) website on Thursday.

The auction will take place on Monday, August 25, 2025, with settlement fixed for Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

The offer comprises two bonds — ₦100 billion FGN JUL 2030, a five-year tenor re-opening, and ₦100 billion 17.95% FGN JUNE 2032, a seven-year tenor re-opening.

Each bond unit is priced at ₦1,000, with a minimum subscription of ₦5,000 and additional investments in multiples of ₦1,000. Investors can subscribe for up to ₦50 million.

The interest rate will be determined based on the yield-to-maturity bid that clears the total volume offered at auction, since both bonds are re-openings of previously issued instruments. Interest payments will be made semi-annually, while the principal will be repaid in full through a bullet repayment at maturity.

DMO stated that the issuance aligns with the Debt Management Office (Establishment) Act, 2003, and the Local Loans (Registered Stock and Securities) Act, CAP. L17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The agency also disclosed the successful completion of the July 2025 FGN bond auction, which recorded a total allotment of ₦185.9 billion across two reopened bond offerings.

The July exercise attracted ₦39.075 billion in subscriptions for the 5-Year FGN APR 2029 bond and ₦261.597 billion for the 7-Year FGN JUN 2032 bond. Out of these, ₦13.430 billion was allotted for the APR 2029 bond and ₦172.502 billion for the JUN 2032 bond, amounting to a total allotment of ₦185.932 billion, surpassing the initial offer size.

While the bonds retained their original coupon rates of 19.30% and 17.95%, they were allotted at marginal rates of 15.69% for the 5-Year bond and 15.90% for the 7-Year bond, reflecting a decline in yield expectations. Analysts suggest this may indicate investor confidence in easing inflationary pressures and a stable monetary policy outlook in the medium term.

The July auction attracted 149 bids in total — 40 for the 2029 maturity and 109 for the 2032 maturity. Of these, 74 bids were successful, comprising 15 for the 2029 bond and 59 for the 2032 bond.
