Over 1.3 Million Nigerians Complete Online Voter Pre-Registration As INEC Opens Physical Centres

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that more than 1.3 million Nigerians have completed their online pre-registration for voter cards in the first week of the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

According to a statement released on Monday, the online process, which began on August 18, 2025, recorded 1,379,342 applications as of Sunday, August 24. The exercise will run until August 30, 2026.

INEC’s breakdown showed that 661,846 registrants (47.96%) are male, while 717,856 (52.04%) are female. Young people aged 18 to 34 accounted for the majority with 860,286 entries (62.37%). Students made up 374,534 of registrants (27.15%), while 27,089 persons with disabilities (1.96%) also participated.

“Full details have been published on our website and other official platforms for public information,” the Commission stated.

Meanwhile, physical registration commenced on Monday across INEC’s 811 state and local government offices nationwide. This provides opportunities for citizens who prefer in-person registration or need to complete an online application.

The Commission reminded Nigerians that the CVR is only open to citizens aged 18 and above who have not previously registered. It warned that double or multiple registrations remain an offence but clarified that voters may transfer their registration or apply for replacement of lost or damaged cards.

INEC also announced a restriction of movement from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day and appealed to eligible citizens not to delay registration until the final days, noting that past experiences showed last-minute rushes often led to congestion and calls for extensions.

With both online and in-person platforms now running, INEC expressed confidence that the CVR would enhance voter access and participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Nigeria, Brazil Strengthen Health Ties with Proposed Five-Year Action Plan

0

Nigeria and Brazil have agreed to deepen cooperation in the health sector as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to the South American nation.

During a high-level bilateral meeting attended by ministers and senior officials from both countries, President Tinubu and his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening South-South collaboration, describing the renewed engagement as a restart of Nigeria-Brazil relations.

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako, who accompanied President Tinubu, highlighted health cooperation as a central focus of discussions. Nigeria proposed the development of a five-year joint action plan to advance the memorandum of understanding signed in July between the Federal Ministry of Health and Brazil’s Ministry of Health.

The Nigerian delegation also suggested a strategic government-to-government procurement framework to bolster healthcare systems in both countries, underscoring a shared commitment to improving healthcare delivery and development.

Rivers CP Assures Security Ahead of LGA Elections, Orders Restriction of Movement

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has assured residents of adequate security ahead of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday at the state police command headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Adepoju disclosed that sufficient manpower had been deployed across the state to guarantee safety during the polls.

He noted that in the build-up to the elections, police operatives had been raiding blackspots and arresting criminal elements to ensure a secure environment.

Adepoju stressed that security for the election would be handled strictly by the police and military, with no involvement of vigilante groups. He added that all security agencies had contributed personnel and established a joint situation room with a hotline for the public to provide information.

The Commissioner further announced a restriction of movement from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day, urging residents to comply with the directive and conduct themselves peacefully before, during, and after the exercise.

Super Falcons Captain Ajibade Joins PSG on Two-Year Contract

0

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have confirmed the signing of Nigerian international Rasheedat Ajibade on a two-year deal.

Ajibade, captain of the Super Falcons, makes the move to France after leaving Atlético de Madrid at the end of last season.

The 24-year-old forward played a key role in Nigeria’s 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph, where she was named Player of the Tournament after scoring once and providing two assists as the Falcons secured a record 10th title.

She will now team up with compatriot Jennifer Echegini at PSG as the club seeks to bolster its squad and reclaim the Ligue 1 Féminine crown, last won in 2021.

PDP Vows To Sanction Members Backing Tinubu As Party Zones 2027 Presidency To South

0

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South zone caretaker committee, Emmanuel Ogidi, has warned that the party will discipline members found engaging in anti-party activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on ADBN TV’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Ogidi dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) influenced the PDP’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

Asked about the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other PDP members openly endorsing President Bola Tinubu, Ogidi said:

“We are watching our members, and of course, any party that does not have discipline cannot succeed. We will discipline any erring members.”

The PDP chieftain accused the APC of attempting to destabilise the South but insisted their efforts had failed.

“APC have been running towards the South because they want to destabilise the South; they are trying to weaken us in the South, but they failed,” he said.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-lawmaker Dino Melaye are among those who recently defected from the PDP to the opposition ADC coalition, which has attracted several top politicians.

Ogidi said reconciliation efforts remain ongoing but stressed that deliberate acts of sabotage will not be tolerated.

“We are on reconciliation. If it doesn’t work, then we are going to apply the big stick. As for those who have left, our doors are always open. At the time they left, many were unsure of the party’s direction, but now we are more certain and I believe they will return,” he said.

He emphasised that the PDP’s priority was not personalities but rebuilding trust after years of leadership tussles and internal crises.

“For now, our pursuit is not about the candidate but about regaining the confidence of Nigerians. PDP is not owned by any individual; it belongs to the people,” Ogidi noted.

On Monday, the PDP formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South while retaining the national chairmanship in the North — a move party leaders said was aimed at stabilising the PDP ahead of the next election.

The ruling APC has already endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027, setting the stage for a major political contest.

Tinubu Secures Petrobras’ Return To Nigeria, Signs Five MoUs With Brazil

0

President Bola Tinubu has secured the return of Petrobras to Nigeria, five years after the Brazilian state-owned oil giant halted its joint venture operations.

A statement from the Presidency, signed by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development on Monday.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Brasília during his State Visit to Brazil, Tinubu said Petrobras’ re-entry would reignite energy sector cooperation between both countries.

“We have the largest gas repository. So I don’t see why Petrobras doesn’t join as a partner in Nigeria as soon as possible. I appreciate President Lula’s promise that this will be done as soon as possible,” Tinubu stated.

During the visit, Nigeria and Brazil signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering trade, diplomacy, science, aviation, and finance. President Tinubu also signed a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) with Brazil to deepen economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties.

The Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, noted that Petrobras, which previously exited Nigeria’s Agbami field, had been in talks with Nigerian authorities as part of preparations for the 2025 Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism.

Tinubu praised President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s commitment to revitalising bilateral relations, stressing that Nigeria’s economic space remains “a virgin land, full of opportunities for Brazilian companies.” He highlighted Brazil’s aircraft manufacturer Embraer’s plans to establish a service hub in Nigeria for the subregion’s airlines.

Emphasising stronger economic cooperation, Tinubu said Nigeria was ready to partner with Brazil on technology transfer, food security, manufacturing, renewable energy, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.

“The reforms I’ve embarked upon since I took over in Nigeria have been very impactful. It was initially painful, but today the result is blossoming,” Tinubu said, assuring investors that his administration’s policies were yielding results.

President Lula, in response, described Nigeria-Brazil ties as “a world of possibilities,” listing agriculture, oil and gas, fertilisers, aircraft, and machinery as key cooperation areas. He confirmed that direct Lagos–São Paulo flights would soon commence, to be operated by Air Peace.

Following a two-hour expanded bilateral meeting at the Palácio do Planalto, both leaders witnessed the signing of:

  • A Bilateral Air Services Agreement between Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filhos.
  • An Agreement on Diplomatic Training Cooperation, signed by Nigeria’s Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu and Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
  • An MoU on Political Consultations covering bilateral, regional, and international issues.
  • An MoU on Science, Technology, and Innovation, signed by Nigeria’s Geoffrey Nnaji and Brazil’s Luciana Santos.
  • An MoU on Trade and Agricultural Investment, signed by Nigeria’s Bank of Agriculture MD Ayo Sotinrin and Brazil’s BNDES Minister Aluísio Mercadante.

Trade between Nigeria and Brazil totalled nearly US$2.1 billion in 2024, with Brazil exporting US$1 billion — mainly sugar and jams — and importing US$1.1 billion, mostly fertilisers.

President Tinubu later attended a state luncheon hosted at the Itamaraty Palace.

Rivers APC Vows To Retire Amaechi, Omehia From Politics After 2027 Elections

0

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State has declared that former governors Rotimi Amaechi and Celestine Omehia will be retired from active politics after the 2027 general elections.

The Director-General of the Ikwerre APC Campaign Organisation for the August 30 local government election, Obinna Ekem, made the declaration on Sunday while addressing supporters at the grand finale of their rally in Omagwa community.

Ekem expressed confidence that the APC would win decisively in all 13 wards of the LGA in the forthcoming polls, citing assurances from residents. He said the party was also preparing for the 2027 general elections, vowing a landslide victory for President Bola Tinubu despite the opposition alliance led by Amaechi and Omehia.

According to him, Ikwerre remained solidly under APC’s control, even though Amaechi and Omehia, who hail from the area, are members of the opposition coalition. He alleged that during Amaechi’s leadership of the APC in Rivers State, the party suffered repeated defeats, but since his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the APC had brighter electoral prospects.

Ekem urged President Tinubu to focus his political energy on national rivals such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark, assuring that the Ikwerre APC would “handle Amaechi and Omehia” locally.

Backing the position, Rivers APC Chairman, Tony Okocha — who enjoys the support of the party’s national secretariat — called on residents not to allow any political party to dominate the forthcoming local government election.

Okocha also promised that the August 30 exercise would be more credible than the October 2024 poll conducted under suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which was later annulled by the Supreme Court.

JAMB Directs Candidates To Re-Upload 2025 O’Level Results For Admission

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has ordered all candidates who uploaded their O’Level results before the release of the final 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results to revisit accredited centres and re-upload their results.

The directive, issued in JAMB’s official bulletin and shared on its X handle on Monday, explained that all previously uploaded results had been cleared from its system to avoid confusion in the admission process.

“Candidates who sat the UTME with awaiting results are required to upload their O’Level results as soon as they are released. Many began uploading the WAEC 2025 SSCE before the final results were released. To avoid any confusion, the Board cleared all prior uploads, and all candidates are now required to re-upload their results, whether or not they differ from the earlier results uploaded,” JAMB stated.

The Board stressed that failure to comply would affect candidates’ eligibility for admission consideration in the ongoing process. “Please re-upload your 2025 SSCE result to the JAMB portal without delay,” it added.

The announcement has triggered mixed reactions among candidates, many of whom had earlier rushed to upload their results to meet admission requirements.

In response to a query by an X user identified as @Ndukaphilip43644, who asked about results uploaded before the implementation of verification, JAMB reiterated its stance: “You’re advised to please visit any of our accredited facilities to verify your result. Thank you.”

With this directive, candidates are required to promptly return to accredited JAMB centres nationwide to re-upload their final WAEC results for smooth admission processing.

Joe Abah Says Proposed Pay Rise For Politicians Ill-Timed, Insensitive

0

A former Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Dr. Joe Abah, has faulted the proposed salary review for political office holders, describing the move as ill-timed and insensitive.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily on Monday, Abah said, “It is often not enough that something is the right thing to do. Something could be the right thing to do, but if you do it in the wrong sequence, at the wrong time, and in the wrong way, you end up doing more harm than good. My thinking is that the timing is not right, the optics are not right.”

He criticised government spending patterns, citing the size of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet and the proliferation of agencies and commissions. “The government has not demonstrated that it takes fiscal prudence seriously. We have the largest cabinet in Nigeria’s history. Every day, new agencies and commissions are created. I have always argued that for every new agency we create, we should close at least ten,” he said.

“You cannot in good conscience announce an increase in the pay of political office holders when we already have about 50 ministers, countless assistants, special advisers, and technical aides. Nobody even knows the full numbers. It does not create the impression that this is the right thing to do at this time,” he added.

Abah further pointed to distortions in the public sector pay system, where officials at the same level often earned different amounts. He argued that such issues required “urgent correction” before salary increases could be considered, especially with the recently approved ₦70,000 minimum wage.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) had announced plans to review the salaries of political office holders, describing their current earnings as “inadequate, unrealistic, and outdated,” noting that they had remained unchanged since 2008.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has also rejected the plan, describing it as insensitive and unjust. Its President, Joe Ajaero, warned that the move would worsen inequality and deepen poverty.

“RMAFC should put on hold this exercise before it triggers a tsunami,” Ajaero said in a statement on Sunday. “The plan will only succeed in deepening the growing inequality between civil servants and political office holders and further impoverish the generality of Nigerians, majority of whom are already multi-dimensionally poor.”

Malema Declares Xenophobia A Betrayal Of African Unity, Calls For One Currency, One Presidency

0

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, has described xenophobia as a betrayal of African unity, insisting it is driven by poverty, inequality, and government failure rather than by migrants.

Speaking as keynote speaker at the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Enugu on Sunday, Malema said, “Xenophobia is a betrayal of African unity. It is a sickness borne of poverty, inequality, and government failure. Its victims are our African brothers and sisters. Nigerians, Zimbabweans, Congolese, and Somalis are not the cause of South Africa’s unemployment crisis. The cause lies in the untransformed dichotomy of South Africa, which remains in the hands of the white minority and multinational corporations who continue to exploit while refusing to industrialise.”

The firebrand opposition leader stressed that South African and Nigerian businesses have deeply integrated into each other’s economies, while Nigerian music, film, and literature continue to shape South African culture. He argued that true African unity requires economic integration.

“If we want to end one-way migration, where Nigerians are forced to leave home in search of opportunity in South Africa, we must integrate our economies. Young Nigerian engineers should be able to work in Johannesburg, Cairo, and Accra, not as foreigners but as Africans contributing to Africa. South African entrepreneurs should be able to set up in Lagos without suspicion but with support as partners in a shared future,” Malema said.

Highlighting the combined resources of Nigeria and South Africa, Malema urged both nations to lead Africa into industrialisation. “Nigeria is blessed with oil, natural gas, and a growing agricultural sector. South Africa holds some of the richest deposits of platinum, magnesium, and coal in the world. Combined, we possess the minerals, the energy resources, and the human capital to build a self-sufficient continent. Yet both our nations remain trapped in neo-colonial arrangements, where raw materials are exported cheaply and sold back to us at crazy prices as finished goods. This cycle of dependency we must break.”

Malema further rejected the idea that Africa’s salvation would come from foreign powers. “Our salvation lies here in Lagos and Johannesburg, in Abuja and Pretoria, in the hands of Africans who refuse to be divided. We must harmonise trade policies, align visa regimes, and build continental infrastructure that connects our people. We actually do not need a visa between South Africa and Nigeria in the same way we don’t need a visa for people to travel within their continent. We are one.”

The EFF president reiterated his radical call for a unified Africa under one authority. “One president, one parliament, one currency, and one military command will consolidate our strength,” he declared, urging Nigeria and South Africa to drive the African Continental Free Trade Area in a way that benefits ordinary citizens.

He also warned African governments against reckless borrowing from international lenders, stressing the need to regulate loans from the World Bank and IMF.

“Africans must love themselves, not kill one another. Black people are not loved in Africa, and not loved abroad either, but we must learn to treat ourselves better,” Malema said, rejecting the “dark continent” label and insisting Africa is richly endowed with diamonds, minerals, and resources that can secure prosperity.

CDS Musa Urges African Defence Chiefs To Harness AI, Technology In Fight Against Terrorism

0

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has called on African military leaders to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) and modern technology as critical tools in combating terrorism across the continent.

Speaking at the opening of the Africa Chief of Defence Staff Conference in Abuja on Monday, Musa stressed that security threats have evolved beyond conventional warfare, requiring digital and technological responses.

“The battlefield is evolving, the threats of today are no longer confined to conventional warfare; they are digital, asymmetric and often invisible – the enemy is within,” Musa said. “As chiefs of defence staff and heads of our Armed Forces, we must lead the charge in organising our forces, investing in cyber-defence, artificial intelligence and indigenous military technology, without which it will be difficult to achieve our security.”

The CDS reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional and continental stability, noting the country’s active role in peacekeeping and counter-terrorism operations across Africa. He emphasised the importance of intelligence sharing, joint training, and coordinated actions to tackle insurgencies perpetrated by groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, Al-Qaeda, and Al-Shabaab.

“We believe that true security is not achieved in isolation; it is built through shared intelligence, joint training and coordinated actions,” Musa said. “Nigeria stands ready to work with our brothers across the continent to develop frameworks that are proactive, resilient and responsive to the realities of our time.”

He urged African defence chiefs to rise above division and build collective strength against terrorism. “The challenges before us are great, but so too is our resolve. Let’s rise above division and embrace unity; let us build a continent where our people can live free and fair and where our Armed Forces are symbols of stability, professionalism and pride,” he concluded.
