Fed. Govt clarifies NIN is mandatory for foreign diplomats residents in Nigeria

The Federal Government says National Identity Number is mandatory for foreign diplomats who will reside in Nigeria for a continuous period of two years or more.

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Doctor Isa Pantami in a statement by his Technical Assistant, Doctor Femi Adeluyi, said an enrolment center has been established for the foreign diplomats at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The statement said the desk will be set up on Tuesday, the nineteenth of January, 2021.

It stated that the enrolment center will provide support for members of the Diplomatic Corps and will be managed by the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, through the National Identity Management Commission.

 Meanwhile, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Doctor Isa Pantami, has approved the reactivation of twenty centers within the Federal Capital Territory to ease the process of enrollment for the National Identification Number.

The reactivation is expected to commence on Monday.

The Minister has also endorsed the closure of enrolment activities at the National Identity Management Commission Headquarters in Abuja.

President Buhari approves appointment of Brigadier Gen. Mohammed Marawa Rtd.as chairman/CEO, NDLEA

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of former Military Administrator of Lagos and Borno States, Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa, retired, as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media, and Publicity, Garba Shehu, affirmed that the President has given his go-ahead for the appointment.

Before his appointment, Brigadier-General Marwa, retired, was the Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse, between 2018 and December 2020, when he presided over the development of a blueprint on how to end drug abuse in Nigeria.

The appointment is with immediate effect.

FG approves Jan. 18 as day for resumption of schools

The Federal Government has approved the resumption of schools on January eighteen after reaching consensus with Governors, Commissioners and other stakeholders.

The consensus was reached at a meeting between the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu and Commissioners of Education in Abuja.

Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Architect Sonny Echono, who confirmed this to Newsmen, said they had extensive discussions with state governors, proprietors of schools, labour and staff unions and students’ representatives and the consensus is that they should reopen all schools.

Architect Echono, however, added warned that the reopening of schools will be in compliance with COVID-19 protocols, especially strict adherence to non-pharmaceutical procedures.

Edo State Government mandates workers and visitors to government offices to use face masks

The Edo State Government has insisted that it will not allow workers and visitors without face masks into government offices as part of measures to check the spread of the second wave of COVID-19.
 
In a statement, the Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa, said the collective effort is required to check the spread of the deadly disease.
 
According to him, In view of the vital importance of this policy to the government’s overall efforts at stemming the tide of the pandemic, it is imperative that all permanent secretaries and other Heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of government ensure that compulsory use of face masks is enforced in public buildings across the state.
 
He urged workers to observe relevant safety protocols including handwashing, social distancing, and encouraging others to do so.

Governor Godwin Obaseki meets with religious leaders over increasing cases of COVID-19

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has rallied religious leaders in the state to redouble their efforts in supporting the state government’s efforts to halt the spread of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
 
Speaking during a virtual meeting with Christian and Muslim leaders in the state, the governor intimated to the leaders that though the state government has deployed resources in tackling the second wave of COVID-19, the data from its Emergency Operation Centre shows that the pandemic would be more devasting if precautionary measures are not strictly adhered to.
 
The governor urged religious organizations to play active roles in concretizing their members on adhering to COVID-19 prevention guidelines when in church and also when they interact with others in markets, parks, and other public places.
 
Chairman of Edo State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Bishop Oyennude Kure noted that the religious leaders would activate the CAN COVID-19 compliance committee to monitor and ensure that churches are equipped with handwashing stations, observe social distancing and limit the duration of their services.
 
The Chief Imam of Benin Central Mosque, Abdulfatah Enabulele, said that he would spread the word on the fatality of the second wave of COVID-19 to mosques across the state and pledged to communicate the deadly nature of the disease to the Muslim faith so they can take personal responsibility for their safety.
 
Chaplain of the University of Benin, Venerable Osazee Egbenusi, said it was essential for the CAN compliance committee to get to work and ensure that churches adhere to the precautionary health and safety guidelines.

Court martial sentences soldier to death for killing superior officer

A court-martial sitting in Maiduguri, Borno State capital has sentenced Trooper Azunna Maduabuchi to death by firing squad for killing the adjutant of his unit, one Lieutenant Babakaka Ngorgi.

Trooper Maduabuchi was arraigned for murder after shooting Lieutenant Ngorgi in July, 2020 at close range in Bama Local Government of Borno State for refusing to grant him a welfare pass.

He was sentenced to death by firing squad after he was found guilty at the court session held at the Maipmalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

This is in accordance with Section 106 of the Armed Forces Act.

Some other soldiers were arraigned for manslaughter and sentenced to various years of imprisonment.

One of the soldiers Sergeant Sani Ishaya was sentenced to four years, Bidemi Fabiyi sentenced to two years while Private Musa Bala and Private Abdulraheed Adamu were sentenced to one-year imprisonment each.

Another soldier Mohammed Kudu who is accused of shooting a twelve year-old boy at a wedding is also sentenced to three years imprisonment.

Lance Corporal Aja Emmanuel arraigned for a lone charge of assault has been de-ranked and now a private soldier.

Ex-AGF Adoke Tests Positive In UAE

A Former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, has tested positive for Coronavirus in the United Arab Emirate (UAE), where he had gone for medical check-up.

He is stranded in the UAE and is unable to return to Nigeria.

His lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), disclosed this on Monday at the resumption of proceedings in the money laundering case involving Adoke and a businessman, Aliyu Abubakar, at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Reopening Of Schools, Religious Centres Fuelling Second Wave …PTF

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has blamed re-opening of schools, businesses and religious centres without compliance with safety measures for increasing number of infections.

Chairman of the PTF and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, disclosed this on Monday during a media briefing in Abuja.

He also identified re-opening of airports and increased local and international travels as another source of spread of the second wave of the disease.

Noting the intensity of the new wave of infection is unlike the earlier one as it is swifter and deadlier, Mustapha warned Nigerians to be more vigilant as the capacity to respond to the speed of the spread might not be sufficient.

He stated the best chance for every individual would be to ensure to avoid being infected.

Speaking on efforts to understand the COVID-19 strain circulating in the country, Mustapha said the PTF had commenced works with the African Centre for Disease Control (ACDC) and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on the sequencing of the disease.

On international travel protocols, he said the PTF had continued to receive inquiries about testing before travelling out of the country, explaining the protocol in Nigeria requires in-bound passengers to test, not more than 96 hours, before boarding flights to Nigeria.

“However, for passengers leaving Nigeria, it remains the responsibility of travelers to confirm the requirements of the country of destination and that of the carrier of choice.

Osimhen Positive After Second COVID-19 Test

Napoli have confirmed that record-signing Victor Osimhen remains positive for COVID-19 after a fresh coronavirus test was conducted on him on Monday.

The Italian club stated this on their Twitter handle.

Osimhen first tested positive for COVID-19 upon return to Naples on New Year’s Day, after spending time in Nigeria, where he attended a birthday party and breached COVID-19 protocols.

Videos showed the forward dancing without a facemask, while his guests also broke COVID-19 protocols, which angered Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso and the club’s fans.

However, after 10 days in isolation, Napoli announced the player was still positive.
