Several Passengers Injured In Abuja-Kaduna Train Accident

0

Several passengers were injured on Monday morning following a train incident on the Abuja–Kaduna rail line, the Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa, said the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. near Asham Train Station.

According to Opeifa, the incident involved a rear locomotive making contact with the passenger coach immediately behind it due to a coupling issue.

He confirmed that several passengers sustained injuries but noted that no fatalities were recorded.

Emergency Response Activated

Opeifa said injured passengers were promptly attended to and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Emergency response protocols were immediately activated, with technical teams deployed to the site to assess the situation.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau is also on site to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident in line with established safety procedures.

The affected train eventually arrived at Idu Train Station at approximately 10:39 a.m., about 38 minutes behind schedule, after the damaged locomotive and coach were removed.

Rail Safety Concerns

The Nigerian Railway Corporation assured passengers that safety remains its top priority and that measures are being taken to ensure the continued safe operation of rail services.

Nigeria’s rail system has experienced several derailments in recent years, particularly along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor.

In 2025, the Nigerian Senate launched a nationwide investigation into persistent rail failures.

Lawmakers established an ad hoc committee chaired by Adams Oshiomhole to examine the causes of repeated derailments, assess the condition of rail infrastructure, and review loans obtained from China for rail development.

The committee was mandated to present its findings to the Senate after a six-week investigation that includes a public hearing.

Iran Still Plans To Play At World Cup, Says Asian Football Body

0

The men’s national football team of Iran is still expected to participate in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to officials of the Asian Football Confederation.

The update comes despite growing concerns about the country’s involvement in the tournament following the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking at a press conference at the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, the confederation’s general secretary Windsor Paul John said there has been no official indication that Iran will withdraw from the competition.

“As far as we know, Iran is playing,” he said.

“We are monitoring whether they are playing or not, but at the moment they are. There is no official information that they are not playing.”

The tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that the Iranian team’s “life and safety” could be at risk if they attend the tournament, citing the ongoing war triggered by U.S.-Israeli strikes on February 28.

Despite the concerns, the AFC expressed hope that Iran would participate in the global showpiece.

“We want Iran to play because they are a top team. So we hope they will solve their issues and be able to participate in the World Cup,” Windsor said.

Women’s Team Asylum Controversy

Meanwhile, controversy has also surrounded members of Iran’s women’s national football delegation who were competing in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia.

Seven members of the delegation had reportedly sought asylum after being labelled “traitors” at home for refusing to sing the national anthem.

However, the captain of the team has since withdrawn her asylum request, leaving only two members of the delegation expected to remain in Australia.

Reports from a former Iranian player and a Persian-language television station claimed some of the players faced pressure to reverse their decision through threats against their families.

Iranian authorities, however, accused Australia of pressuring the players to remain in the country.

The players returning to Iran were reported to be staying at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur while awaiting onward travel.

Asked about their situation, Windsor said the AFC was waiting for the team to decide when they intend to leave.

“It’s their decision and we will support that,” he said.

The FIFA has sanctioned Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo following fan-related incidents during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff match in November.

In a disciplinary report released by the global football body, both countries were found to have breached provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code due to the conduct of their supporters during the African qualifying playoff final, which DR Congo won on penalties.

Fines Imposed

The Nigeria Football Federation was fined 1,000 Swiss francs after Nigerian fans were reported to have thrown objects onto the pitch during the match.

FIFA ruled that the incident violated Articles 17 and 17.2.b of its disciplinary code.

Meanwhile, the Congolese Association Football Federation received a heavier fine of 5,000 Swiss francs after supporters were found guilty of using laser pointers during the game, which FIFA said contravened Article 17.2.d of the code.

Protest Over Player Eligibility

The disciplinary report did not address a separate protest filed by the Nigeria Football Federation, which accused DR Congo of fielding ineligible players during the playoff.

The Nigerian body had earlier petitioned FIFA, alleging that the Congolese federation misled authorities during the process of clearing certain players for national team duty.

According to the NFF, some of the players who featured in the match were fraudulently registered, raising questions about their citizenship status.

Next Playoff Match

While FIFA is yet to rule on the eligibility complaint, DR Congo has already announced its squad for the upcoming intercontinental playoff later this month.

The Congolese side will face the winner of the encounter between the Jamaica national football team and the New Caledonia national football team, with the victor securing one of the final spots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Adeleke Warns Against Use Of ‘Federal Might’ In Osun Election

Adeleke

Governor Ademola Adeleke has cautioned against the use of “federal might” to influence the upcoming August 15 election in Osun State, warning that federal power should be used for governance rather than election manipulation.

Adeleke made the remarks while addressing leaders and ward officials of an enlarged Accord gathering across the 332 wards in Osun State, where he criticised the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress for allegedly threatening to deploy federal institutions during the poll.

Defence Of Electoral Integrity

The governor said the opposition’s repeated references to deploying federal power for the election unfairly dragged the name of President Bola Tinubu into political controversy.

According to him, the president’s use of federal authority is focused on governance initiatives such as infrastructure projects, student loan programmes and the proposed creation of state police, not election rigging.

“I task Osun APC to stop denigrating the names of Mr. President and the federal government. Instead of supporting Mr President and showing the world that the number one citizen is a democrat in words and actions, Osun APC’s campaign slogans have been all the way anti-people and anti-democracy,” Adeleke said.

He insisted that the people of Osun are committed to free and fair elections and that only voters—not political intimidation—should determine the outcome.

“Our people are insistent on their votes deciding who wins, who governs them. Our duty as candidates is to market our manifestos and seek their votes. Only electoral bandits boast of rigging in a democracy,” the governor said.

Mobilisation Ahead Of Poll

Adeleke also urged residents of the state to remain vigilant and prepared for the election, emphasising that no external force could override the will of the people.

Speaking at the event, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Lasun Yusuf called on party leaders to intensify grassroots mobilisation and defend the voting process.

Other speakers at the gathering included Olu Alabi, Wale Oladipo, the Osun chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Sunday Bisi, and the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun.

They all expressed confidence that Adeleke would secure re-election in the August 15 poll.

Ondo PDP Rejects Dissolution Of State Executive Committee

0

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State has dismissed claims that its State Executive Committee has been dissolved, describing the directive as misleading and lacking constitutional backing.

Speaking during a press conference at the party’s secretariat in Akure, the state chairman Dupe Aisida said the party’s leadership in the state remains valid and fully operational.

According to him, the state chapter has not received any official communication from the national leadership of the party ordering the dissolution of its executive committee.

‘Claim Came As A Surprise’

Aisida explained that the party became aware of a letter circulating on social media claiming that a National Caretaker Working Committee had dissolved the Ondo State Executive Committee.

“On Sunday evening, a letter was circulating on the internet and social media reportedly written by someone claiming to be the National Publicity Secretary of the Caretaker Committee of our party, stating that the state executive committee of the PDP in Ondo State had been dissolved. Of course, it came as a surprise to us,” he said.

He insisted that the state leadership emerged through duly conducted congresses in accordance with the party’s constitution.

Congresses Conducted Under Supervision

The chairman explained that the party conducted its ward congress on September 13, 2025, across the state’s 203 wards, with monitoring by the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services.

“The ward congress was conducted in all the 203 wards in Ondo State. INEC was there, the police sent their representatives, the DSS and other stakeholders were present, and they wrote their reports confirming that everything was done according to the guidelines,” Aisida said.

He added that the local government congresses took place on September 17, 2025, across the state’s 18 local government areas, also under the supervision of security agencies and election observers.

No Petitions Filed

According to Aisida, the state congress was eventually held on September 27, 2025, in Akure and was described as peaceful and transparent.

He noted that appeal committees were established for the ward, local government and state congresses, but no petitions were filed against the process.

“As a matter of fact, appeal committees were set up for the ward, local government and state congresses, but not a single petition was received. Everything was seamless and transparent,” he said.

Aisida added that after the congresses, the newly elected executives were sworn in and immediately began party activities aimed at strengthening the opposition in the state.

Tinubu Orders Free Nationwide Rice Distribution For Ramadan, Lent

0

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Renewed Hope Ambassadors to distribute rice across the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory to support citizens observing the Ramadan and Lent periods.

The directive was disclosed by Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State and Director-General of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, in a statement issued over the weekend.

Aim Of The Initiative

Uzodimma said the programme is intended to promote national unity and provide support to families during a period of deep spiritual significance for both Muslims and Christians.

According to him, the distribution will be coordinated through the nationwide grassroots network of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors to ensure the intervention reaches families across the country during the fasting season.

“This initiative reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to unity and compassion. Ramadan and Lent are seasons that remind us of sacrifice, charity and care for one another,” Uzodimma said.

“Through this distribution, the Renewed Hope Ambassadors will ensure that families across Nigeria feel the spirit of togetherness during this sacred period.”

Nationwide Distribution Plan

The programme will be implemented through the organisation’s structures at the state, local government, and ward levels to ensure broad coverage and transparency.

Uzodimma also noted that the intervention aligns with the administration’s broader effort to support citizens during important religious and cultural observances.

He recalled that a similar initiative was carried out during the last Christmas season, when rice was distributed to assist Nigerians celebrating the festive period.

Both Muslim and Christian communities are expected to benefit from the current nationwide distribution.

Tinubu Approves New Military Equipment to Strengthen Fight Against Terrorism

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the procurement of additional military hardware to reinforce the capacity of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in the ongoing battle against insurgency and terrorism across the country.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, disclosed the development on Thursday while speaking to journalists after a high-level security briefing with the President.

According to Musa, the meeting allowed the service chiefs to provide Tinubu with a detailed update on military operations and the current security situation nationwide.

He explained that the briefing gave the President direct insight into developments on the ground and the strategies being deployed by the armed forces.

The defence minister noted that some recent media reports have not fully reflected the scale of military operations being carried out against terrorist groups. While acknowledging that attacks had occurred in some parts of the country, he said the armed forces had responded decisively.

Musa revealed that several high-ranking militant commanders had been neutralised during recent operations, while troops also seized weapons and other assets belonging to insurgent groups.

He paid tribute to soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifice as painful but emphasising that the determination of Nigeria’s armed forces remains strong.

“The commitment of our Armed Forces to ensuring the safety and security of Nigerians is unwavering,” he said.

Musa also appealed to Nigerians for patience and continued support, noting that terrorist groups often intensify their activities during the Ramadan period.

He added that military commanders have adjusted operational strategies to counter the trend and expressed confidence that the approval for new equipment, combined with stronger collaboration among security agencies, would help the country overcome terrorism.

“Our agencies are working together and are fully committed to winning this war,” the minister said.

Nursing Students’ Protest Forces Suspension of ₦580,000 Fee at NAUTH

0

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) has suspended the implementation of the newly introduced ₦580,000 tuition fee for nursing students following protests by students.

The decision was announced by the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Joseph Ugboaja, during an appearance on The Morning Brief on Channels Television.

The fee hike had triggered widespread outrage after students protested a more than 500% increase in tuition—from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000.

According to Ugboaja, the suspension followed consultations with student leaders, the school management, and the governing board after the protests.

He explained that the students’ main complaint was that they were not fully involved in the final decision-making process, even though they were aware that a fee review was being considered.

“We have stopped it and the committee will go back to meet with the students so everyone can agree on the way forward,” he said.

Fee Still “Lowest in the South-East”

Despite suspending the new fee, Ugboaja defended the proposed increase, insisting that the ₦580,000 tuition would still be the lowest among similar nursing programmes in South-East Nigeria.

He explained that the review became necessary after the school transitioned from the RN/RM basic nursing programme to the ND/HND structure introduced by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

Under the new system:

  • Some students are still in the basic nursing/midwifery programme paying ₦90,000.
  • Others are now enrolled in the ND/HND nursing programme, which operates under a different fee structure.

Funding Challenges

Ugboaja also highlighted financial difficulties facing teaching hospitals, noting that they do not receive intervention funding from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

According to him, the proposed fee adjustment was partly aimed at improving infrastructure and helping NAUTH achieve its goal of becoming one of the top three teaching hospitals in Nigeria by 2030.

For now, however, the ₦580,000 fee remains suspended while management and students continue discussions to reach a mutually acceptable solution.

Tinubu Declares Himself a “Die-Hard Democrat” at APC Inter-Faith Event

0

President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria, describing himself as a “die-hard democrat” during an inter-faith breaking of the fast with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Addressing party leaders, Tinubu reflected on his personal sacrifices for democracy over the past 26 years, including protests, street demonstrations, detention, and exile, and noted his involvement in NADECO. He emphasised that his belief in a united Nigeria and democratic governance is lifelong.

“The majority will have their way, and the minority will have their say and their way. I must not stand in their way. That is the sweetness, the essence of democracy,” he said, highlighting the importance of internal democracy within political parties.

Tinubu further stressed that direct primaries empower party members to select their representatives and vowed to uphold good governance and the rule of law throughout his administration.

The APC Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, praised the President for his leadership and assured the party’s continued support for his vision. Meanwhile, IPAC Chairman Yusuf Dantalle urged the President to reconsider making the National Identity Number (NIN) mandatory for voter registration and called for the restoration of INEC’s financial support for political parties.

Tinubu’s remarks come ahead of the premiere of a film titled Unbroken Democracy, documenting 26 years of democratic governance in Nigeria, supported by Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.

Nigeria LNG Shipment Redirected to Asia as Middle East Conflict Disrupts Global Gas Supply

0

A cargo of liquefied natural gas from Nigeria LNG has been diverted from Europe to Asia as buyers in the region scramble to replace supply disrupted by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The shipment marks the second diversion of Nigerian LNG cargoes within the week, highlighting how global price signals are influencing the destination of flexible gas supplies.

The crisis began after military strikes involving the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28 escalated tensions in the region. The conflict has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.

The disruption has affected exports from Qatar, one of the world’s largest LNG exporters, prompting buyers in Asia to compete for alternative cargoes.

Ship-tracking data from analytics firm Kpler showed that the LNG vessel Pan Americas, which loaded at the Bonny LNG Terminal in Nigeria, was initially bound for Croatia before altering course toward Asia via the Cape of Good Hope.

Another LNG tanker, BW Brussels, which loaded a shipment at Bonny Island on February 27, also changed its route earlier in the week, abandoning a westward journey to Europe and heading toward Asia instead.

The sudden disruption of Qatari exports has triggered sharp increases in global natural gas prices. European gas prices surged by as much as 30 per cent, while spot LNG prices in Asia have climbed even higher.

The benchmark Japan-Korea Marker for LNG cargoes rose by more than 68 per cent to about $25.39 per million British thermal units for April delivery, according to data from S&P Global Platts.

By comparison, spot LNG prices for northwest Europe rose by about 57 per cent to roughly $15.48 per mmBtu, making Asian markets the more attractive destination for flexible LNG cargoes.

Analysts say the supply disruption has intensified competition between buyers in Europe and Asia for available shipments, particularly as Asian countries account for more than 80 per cent of Qatar’s LNG exports.

For Nigeria, the development highlights the importance of global market dynamics in determining where LNG cargoes are delivered.

Nigeria’s gas export revenue reached about $2.7 billion in the first quarter of 2025, representing a 27 per cent increase from the previous quarter and an 86 per cent rise year-on-year.

The Federal Government is targeting $10 billion in annual gas exports, with increased demand from the United States and the ongoing expansion of the Bonny facility through the Train 7 project—currently about 80 per cent complete—expected to boost production and revenue.
