Elon Musk Says 2026 Is Going To Be Amazing After Dinner With Trump, Signalling Reconciliation After 2025 Feud

0

Elon Musk has indicated a full reconciliation with President Donald Trump after confirming that he recently had dinner with the president and First Lady, Melania Trump, months after a highly publicised political and personal fallout between the two men.

The Tesla and SpaceX chief disclosed the meeting in a post on X on Tuesday, writing that he had “a lovely dinner” with President Trump and the First Lady, and adding that “2026 is going to be amazing.” The post directly tagged both Donald Trump and Melania Trump.

The dinner, which took place at Mar-a-Lago in January 2026, followed months of open hostility that began in mid-2025 when Musk publicly criticised Trump’s major tax and spending package, popularly referred to as the One Big Beautiful Bill. Musk had described the legislation as a “disgusting abomination,” a remark that prompted a sharp reaction from the president.

As the disagreement escalated, Trump said he was “very disappointed in Elon” and warned that Musk’s companies could lose government contracts and subsidies. Musk responded by accusing Trump of ingratitude and made a series of provocative posts, including comments linking the president to the Jeffrey Epstein files, further intensifying the feud.

The tone later shifted when Musk publicly moderated his stance. In a subsequent post on X, he acknowledged that his comments about Trump had gone too far and expressed regret over the escalation. Trump welcomed the apology, telling reporters that he thought “it was very nice that he did that.”

That exchange marked a turning point in their strained relationship and appeared to open the door to reconciliation. The recent dinner, now publicly confirmed by Musk, suggests that both men have moved beyond the dispute.

In another post reflecting their renewed rapport, Musk shared a photo of himself with Trump and wrote that “2026 will be spectacular,” underscoring a dramatic turnaround from one of the most prominent political and business feuds of 2025 and signalling a reset as the new year begins.

Venezuela’s Interim Leader Names Commission To Handle Maduro’s Release

Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, on Sunday announced the formation of a special commission to pursue the release of former president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, following their removal from power by United States forces in Caracas.

Rodriguez said the commission would be jointly led by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez and Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, with Information Minister Freddy Nanez also included as a member.

Maduro, who has been accused by United States authorities of drug trafficking and terrorism, was detained on Saturday and transferred to New York, where he is being held at a detention facility ahead of a court appearance scheduled for Monday.

In a separate statement issued on Telegram, Rodriguez called for a “balanced and respectful” relationship between Venezuela and the United States, stressing that dialogue and cooperation were essential to shared development. She said Venezuela was ready to engage Washington on a joint agenda for cooperation and mutual respect.

Meanwhile, Venezuela’s military formally recognised Rodriguez as the country’s acting president. Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said the armed forces were backing a Supreme Court ruling that appointed her to lead the country for an initial 90-day period.

Padrino urged citizens to resume normal economic, work and educational activities following the US military operation that resulted in Maduro’s capture, saying the country must continue along its constitutional path.

However, the defence minister condemned the operation as a “cowardly kidnapping,” alleging that some of Maduro’s bodyguards, along with military personnel and civilians, were killed during the action. Venezuelan authorities have yet to release an official casualty figure.

On Sunday, large parts of Caracas remained quiet, with many businesses shut and only limited activity recorded at markets and pharmacies, as uncertainty continued to grip the capital.

Flutterwave Acquires Mono In Deal Valued At Up To $40 Million

Flutterwave has acquired Nigerian open banking startup Mono in an all-stock transaction valued between $25 million and $40 million, a move aimed at strengthening its payments, data, and identity infrastructure across Africa.

The acquisition brings together two major fintech infrastructure players, with Mono set to continue operating independently and without changes to its leadership or day-to-day operations. Early investors in Mono are expected to recover their capital, with some reportedly recording returns of up to 20 times their initial investment.

Flutterwave said Mono’s platform provides secure access to financial data, identity verification, and account-to-account payment services, capabilities it described as increasingly critical as African markets transition toward authenticated, bank-based payment systems.

Flutterwave Chief Executive Officer, Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, said payments, data, and trust must work together, noting that Mono has built vital open-banking infrastructure that will allow Flutterwave to expand opportunities for businesses across Africa while maintaining strong security and compliance standards.

Mono Chief Executive Officer, Abdulhamid Hassan, said the acquisition builds on the existing partnership between both companies, combining Mono’s financial data, payments, and identity infrastructure with Flutterwave’s scale and continental reach.

The integration of Mono’s open-banking application programming interfaces is expected to streamline merchant onboarding, enhance customer verification, reduce fraud, and enable seamless account-to-account payments across multiple African markets. Developers and partners are also expected to benefit from a more unified platform that reduces complexity and accelerates product development.

Industry analysts say the deal deepens Flutterwave’s vertical capabilities, with potential benefits including stronger platform loyalty, improved margins, and closer alignment with global security standards such as PCI-DSS and ISO 27001.

Open banking is increasingly seen as a foundation for Africa’s fintech growth, enabling trusted data sharing, direct bank payments, and the creation of new financial products. By acquiring Mono, Flutterwave positions itself at the centre of the continent’s shift away from card-based systems toward bank-integrated and alternative payment solutions.

Founded in 2020, Mono has processed more than 150 billion transactions, served over seven million users, and expanded its operations into Kenya and Ghana. The acquisition marks a significant step in shaping Africa’s next generation of fintech infrastructure.

BREAKING: Ruben Amorim Sacked As Manchester United Manager

0

Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim following a breakdown in his relationship with the club’s hierarchy.

Sources said tensions had grown between Amorim and the club, particularly with director of football Jason Wilcox. The Portuguese coach had publicly expressed frustration over a lack of activity in the January transfer window during a news conference at Carrington last Friday, ahead of United’s trip to Leeds United.

After Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Elland Road, Amorim reportedly escalated the situation by telling club officials he wanted to be “manager, not the coach,” while also directing criticism at Wilcox, saying he should “do his job.”

Amorim departs Old Trafford after a turbulent 14-month spell, having taken charge in November 2024 following the exit of Erik ten Hag. He recorded 24 wins from 63 matches across all competitions, including 15 victories in the Premier League.

United are currently sixth in the league standings, with eight wins from 20 matches this season.

Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher is expected to take over on an interim basis ahead of Wednesday’s league fixture against Burnley.

Cuba Says 32 Citizens Killed In US Raid That Captured Venezuela’s Maduro

0

Cuba has announced that 32 of its citizens were killed during a United States military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro, a development that has heightened regional tensions.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Cuban government said those killed were members of its armed forces and intelligence services. It declared January 5 and 6 as national days of mourning and noted that details of funeral arrangements would be released in due course.

Havana said the personnel died while carrying out security and defence duties during what it described as intense combat and bombardment of facilities targeted in the raid, adding that their actions were “dignified and heroic.”

Cuba has for years provided security and intelligence support to the Maduro administration, although it remains unclear how many Cuban personnel were directly involved in guarding the Venezuelan leader at the time of the operation and how many were killed elsewhere during the assault. The incident represents one of the heaviest reported losses linked to Cuba’s involvement in Venezuela.

Maduro, 63, and his wife, Cilia Flores, were arrested in Caracas on Saturday and flown to the United States, where he is being held at a detention facility in New York ahead of a court appearance. The Venezuelan president was indicted by US prosecutors in 2020 on charges including narco-terrorism conspiracy, allegations he has repeatedly denied.

Diaz Sends Morocco To AFCON Quarter-Finals

0

Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz scored the decisive goal as Morocco edged Tanzania 1-0 to secure a place in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals in Rabat on Sunday.

Diaz maintained his goal-a-game run at the tournament, finding the net for the fourth consecutive AFCON match to become the first Moroccan player to achieve the feat. His 64th-minute strike proved enough after the hosts dominated large spells of the contest but struggled to convert their chances.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi provided the assist for the winner, marking his first start of the tournament after previously featuring off the bench against Zambia. Hakimi had recently returned from an ankle injury sustained in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich.

Morocco extended their unbeaten run in competitive and friendly matches to 23 games, with their last defeat coming against South Africa at the 2024 AFCON.

Despite enjoying home advantage and the backing of nearly 70,000 supporters, Morocco were initially threatened when Tanzania created the first chance of the match, with Saimon Msuva failing to connect properly with a Selemani Mwalimu cross in the third minute.

The hosts thought they had taken the lead after 15 minutes when Ismael Saibari headed in Abdessamad Ezzalzouli’s free-kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Morocco continued to press, with Ayoub El Kaabi and Diaz both going close before the break, but the first half ended scoreless.

After the restart, Moroccan pressure intensified. Ezzalzouli and El Kaabi missed early chances, while Tanzania’s Feisal ‘Fei Toto’ Salum wasted a rare opening by firing over with only goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to beat. Hakimi then struck the crossbar from a free-kick shortly before the breakthrough.

The winning goal came when Hakimi played in Diaz, who finished from close range at the near post to seal victory.

Morocco will face either South Africa or Cameroon, who meet later on Sunday at another Rabat venue, in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Tinubu Orders Security Chiefs To Hunt Terrorists After 42 Killed In Niger Attacks

0

President Bola Tinubu has directed Nigeria’s security chiefs to launch a full-scale manhunt for terrorists responsible for deadly attacks on communities in Niger State that left at least 42 villagers dead, describing the incident as a direct test of the nation’s resolve.

Reacting on Sunday to the weekend raids on communities in Borgu and Agwara local government areas, the president said the attackers must face the full weight of the law for their criminal actions. He issued firm instructions to the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the service chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services to track down and apprehend the perpetrators, while also ensuring the immediate rescue of abducted victims.

In a statement issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu declared that neither the identity nor the motive of the attackers would shield them from justice, stressing that anyone who aided or enabled the crimes would also be held accountable.

“These terrorists have tested the resolve of our country and its people. They must, therefore, face the full consequences of their criminal actions,” the president said. “No matter who they are or what their intent is, they must be hunted down.”

The attacks, which reportedly lasted for hours on Saturday night, saw gunmen riding on motorcycles invade several villages, killing residents, burning houses and markets, and carting away foodstuffs and valuables. Security sources said a significant number of women and children were abducted during the raids.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed that more than 30 people were killed in Kasuwan Daji, near Papiri village in Agwara Local Government Area, while additional fatalities were recorded in other affected communities. According to the police, the attackers emerged from forest areas bordering the communities and struck around 9pm, before fleeing with their captives.

President Tinubu condemned the attack on Kasuwan Daji and expressed deep sympathy with the families of the victims, as well as the government and people of Niger State. He assured residents that security operations would be intensified around vulnerable communities, particularly those close to forest corridors known to serve as hideouts for criminal groups.

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago described the attacks as “cruel and nefarious”, saying it was disturbing to begin the year with such violence. He said his administration was working closely with federal authorities and security agencies to restore peace and prevent further attacks, while urging residents to remain calm and vigilant.

Condemnation of the killings also came from governors across the country. Ogun State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Dapo Abiodun, described the massacre and abductions as callous and a crime against humanity, urging security agencies to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and called for renewed resolve to protect innocent citizens.

The Northern States Governors’ Forum likewise deplored the attack, describing it as a grave threat to peace and livelihoods. In a statement issued by its chairman, Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, the forum called for intensified security action and prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims, as well as the safe return of those abducted.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance and Senator representing Niger East, Mohammed Sani Musa, urged the president to declare an all-out war on terrorism, warning that repeated attacks on innocent communities underscored the urgency of decisive national action.

As security agencies moved to respond, the Nigerian Army confirmed fresh operational successes against bandits in neighbouring Kogi State, where troops neutralised several suspects, recovered weapons and arrested a logistics supplier linked to criminal groups.

President Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain united and avoid divisive rhetoric, stressing that national cohesion was essential to defeating terrorism and restoring peace to affected communities.

“These times demand our humanity,” the president said. “We must stand together as one people and confront these monsters in unison. United, we can and must defeat them and reclaim peace and security for our communities.”

Driver Of Fatal Car Crash Involving Anthony Joshua In Police Custody

0

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two members of Anthony Joshua’s entourage is currently in police custody.

The police spokesperson in the state, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed that the driver is being detained as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing,” Babaseyi said.

The incident occurred on Monday near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, as Joshua and three associates were travelling from Lagos. The SUV reportedly collided with a stationary truck parked along the road.

While the former heavyweight boxing champion sustained minor injuries in the crash, his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, died from injuries sustained in the accident.

Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps indicated that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking may have contributed to the crash. However, the Ogun State Police Command cited a tyre burst as the immediate cause of the collision, noting that investigations were still ongoing to establish full responsibility.

Joshua was treated at Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, and was discharged on Wednesday after receiving medical attention. Authorities said further updates would be provided as investigations progress.

Obidients Not In ADC Are “DisObidients” — Kenneth Okonkwo

0

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has urged supporters of former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to formally join the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Okonkwo said Obi’s supporters, popularly known as Obidients, who have not registered with the ADC should no longer consider themselves part of the movement.

“When I was in the Labour Party, I said it was a tactical mistake telling your followers they can join all political parties, and I’m very glad that my brother, Peter Obi, has changed the tactic,” Okonkwo said.

“If you listen to his interview on X space, he said all the Obidients should go and register as members of the ADC. So if you are an Obidient and you’re not in the ADC, sorry, you’re not an Obidient, you are a disObidient.”

He described the ADC as a credible opposition platform and a “vehicle of good people,” insisting that the party currently enjoys strong backing in the South-East.

“Anybody you see in the ADC is allowed to get into the ADC on one condition: you must be a true democrat. One thing ADC will not compromise on is internal democracy and living on the tenets of democracy,” he said.

“No leader, no opposition leader was allowed to give conditions before entering because we want to exercise discipline. So that is why everybody took their time to come to ADC because we want that foundation to be solid.

“Now, the South-East has gone ADC, as I said, they will. Any other politician who is not in the ADC, who wants to do any other party, is working for Tinubu,” he added.

While welcoming Peter Obi’s defection to the party, Okonkwo said he would support whoever emerges as the ADC’s presidential candidate in 2027.

“He is an ADC member. We work with every ADC member.

“Rest assured, whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the ADC, I will work for the person. I don’t have any personal rift with any person,” he stated.

Okonkwo, who is also a member of the ADC National Working Committee, noted that the party is yet to make a final decision on the zoning of its presidential ticket.

Iran Protests Turn Deadly As Nationwide Clashes With Security Forces Intensify

0

Deadly clashes between protesters and security forces have escalated across Iran as nationwide demonstrations over rising living costs entered a fifth day, with multiple fatalities reported in several western and southern cities.

Reports from state media and a Kurdish human rights group indicated that at least two people were killed during confrontations in the south-western city of Lordegan, while three deaths were recorded in Azna and another in Kouhdasht, both in western Iran. Authorities did not immediately clarify whether those killed were protesters or security personnel.

The Kurdish rights group identified the two people killed in Lordegan as protesters, naming them as Ahmad Jalil and Sajjad Valamanesh, although the information could not be independently verified.

Videos circulating on social media showed vehicles set ablaze and running battles between demonstrators and security forces, as chants against Iran’s clerical leadership echoed through several cities. Some protesters called for an end to the rule of the supreme leader, while others voiced support for the restoration of the monarchy.

Verified footage showed protests taking place in Tehran, Lordegan and Marvdasht in southern Fars province. As the unrest spread, clashes were reported involving Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and the Basij militia. State media claimed that one member of the security forces was killed in Kouhdasht on Wednesday night, while protesters countered that the victim was a demonstrator shot by security personnel.

Authorities also said at least 13 police officers and Basij members were injured by stone-throwing during the clashes.

In response to the growing unrest, the government ordered the closure of schools, universities and public institutions nationwide on Wednesday, officially citing energy conservation due to cold weather. Many Iranians, however, interpreted the move as an attempt to curb the protests.

The demonstrations began in Tehran among shopkeepers angered by a sharp fall in the value of the national currency against the US dollar, before spreading to universities and other cities and evolving into broader protests against the country’s political leadership.

The unrest represents the most widespread protests since the 2022 demonstrations triggered by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, though on a smaller scale. Security has since been tightened in key areas of Tehran where the protests first erupted.

President Masoud Pezeshkian said his administration was prepared to listen to the “legitimate demands” of protesters, while Prosecutor General Mohammad Movahedi-Azad warned that any attempt to destabilise the country would face a “decisive response.”
