Arsenal Stun Real Madrid at Bernabéu to Reach Champions League Semifinals

Date:

Arsenal FC delivered a masterclass performance at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday night, defeating defending champions Real Madrid 2-1 (5-1 on aggregate) to secure their place in the Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2009.

In a match filled with drama, Bukayo Saka opened the scoring in the 65th minute with a sublime chip over Thibaut Courtois, redeeming himself after having a first-half penalty saved by the Belgian goalkeeper. The England international’s Panenka attempt in the 12th minute had been comfortably stopped, keeping Madrid’s hopes alive.

Real Madrid responded immediately through Vinícius Júnior, who capitalized on a defensive error by William Saliba to briefly level the score just two minutes after Arsenal’s opener. However, substitute Gabriel Martinelli sealed the victory in stoppage time with a clinical finish, sending the traveling Arsenal fans into raptures.

The match featured several controversial VAR decisions, including a reversed penalty call for Madrid when Kylian Mbappé went down under pressure from Declan Rice. The French superstar, who had an early goal ruled out for offside, later limped off with an ankle injury in the 75th minute, dealing another blow to Madrid’s comeback hopes.

Mikel Arteta’s tactical setup proved perfect for containing Madrid’s attacking threats, with David Raya largely untested throughout the match. The victory continues Arsenal’s remarkable European campaign and sets up a semifinal clash against Paris Saint-Germain, who eliminated Barcelona earlier in the week.

For Real Madrid, the defeat marks a disappointing end to their title defense and raises questions about their ability to compete with Europe’s elite despite their storied history in the competition. Carlo Ancelotti’s side created few clear chances across both legs, managing just three shots on target in 180 minutes against Arsenal’s disciplined defense.

The Gunners will now turn their attention to the semifinal first leg against PSG, scheduled for April 30 or May 1, with the return leg set for May 7 or 8. This historic victory at the Bernabéu cements Arsenal’s status as genuine contenders for their first ever Champions League trophy.
