Arsenal Stun Real Madrid 3-0 in Champions League Quarterfinal as Rice’s Free-Kick Steals Show

Date:

Declan Rice announced himself as Arsenal’s latest European hero with two stunning free-kick goals in a commanding 3-0 win over defending champions Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg at the Emirates Stadium.

The £105 million midfielder, who had never scored a direct free-kick in his professional career before Tuesday night, left goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois rooted with thunderous strikes in the 58th and 70th minutes. Mikel Merino added a third in the 75th minute before Real’s Eduardo Camavinga was sent off late for dissent, capping a frustrating evening for the visitors.

The result marks one of Arsenal’s most dominant European displays in recent memory and puts them in firm control ahead of next week’s return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Rice’s opener—a 25-yard curler around the wall into the far corner—drew gasps from the home crowd, including free-kick icon Roberto Carlos, who was in attendance. His second, a 20-yard rocket that glanced off the crossbar on its way in, further cemented a memorable night for the Englishman.

Real Madrid’s attacking trio of Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, and Vinícius Júnior were primarily contained after early chances, with Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya producing several key stops to preserve the clean sheet.

The loss leaves the 15-time European champions with a steep challenge in the second leg as they aim to avoid elimination at this stage for the first time since 2020.

For Arsenal, the emphatic victory not only keeps their Champions League hopes alive but also provides momentum in their pursuit of silverware, as they trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by 11 points. The Gunners are bidding to reach their first semifinal since 2009.
