Akwa Ibom Police Uncover Illegal Maternity Home, Rescue Women and Infants

Suspect Arrested for Alleged Child Trafficking and Unlawful Medical Practice

Uyo, Akwa Ibom State – Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have busted an illegal maternity home in Usung Atiat, Abak Local Government Area, following credible intelligence. The facility was allegedly involved in child trafficking, unlawful medical practice, and impersonation.

In a statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, it was revealed that the raid led to the arrest of one Patience Jimmy, who was found sheltering seven pregnant women and five infants, aged between two weeks and one year.

Recovery of Medical Supplies

During the operation, police recovered various medical supplies, including syringes, drip lines, herbs, and immunization records. The suspect, however, had no legal authorization to operate a medical facility or possess such items.

Police Vow to Combat Illegal Activities

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, reiterated the Command’s commitment to dismantling illegal operations that endanger vulnerable individuals. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities.

“This discovery underscores the need for continued vigilance and cooperation from the public to eradicate such unlawful practices,” CP Azare stated.

The rescued women and infants have been taken into protective custody, while the suspect is currently undergoing interrogation. Further investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the illegal activities and identify other individuals involved.

This operation highlights the Akwa Ibom State Police Command’s dedication to safeguarding the welfare of citizens and combating criminal activities that exploit vulnerable populations.
