The 19th edition of the Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) has officially opened in Abuja with a strong call for innovation, strategic collaboration, and policy alignment to bridge Africa’s massive housing gap.

Themed “Re-Imagining Housing Through Innovation, Collaboration and Policy,” the event is jointly organised by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in partnership with the AIHS Secretariat. The week-long gathering is attracting over 400 exhibitors, housing experts, investors, and policymakers from more than 21 countries.

With sub-Saharan Africa facing an estimated housing deficit of over 50 million units—driven by rapid urbanisation and growing slum populations—speakers emphasised the urgency of actionable partnerships to deliver affordable housing solutions in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11.

Chairman of AIHS and former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Professor Jerry Gana, said the housing crisis presents a massive investment opportunity. He called on the Federal Government to prioritise investor incentives and increase access to housing finance.

Also speaking, Ghanaian lawmaker, Professor Vincent Asamoh, commended Nigeria for championing innovative housing and renewable energy models designed for modern populations.

Statistician-General of the Federation and CEO of the National Bureau of Statistics, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, expressed concern that only 32.8% of urban residents in Nigeria own their homes. He, however, acknowledged the growing contribution of the real estate sector to Nigeria’s rebased GDP.

Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, said the government is considering tax exemptions and incentives for the real estate sector under the proposed tax regime.

Meanwhile, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, reiterated the crucial role of state governments in ensuring land accessibility for developers and potential homeowners. He encouraged participants to fully engage with the wide range of exhibitions, technical sessions, and networking opportunities throughout the summit.

The Africa International Housing Show continues this week in Abuja.
