AI Impersonator Mimics US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Attempt to Deceive Officials

Date:

A sophisticated impersonation scheme using artificial intelligence to mimic the voice and communication style of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has triggered concern among national security officials, ADBN TV has learned.

According to a State Department cable, an unidentified actor used AI-generated voice and text messages resembling Rubio to contact foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a sitting member of Congress. The impersonator’s intent, investigators believe, was to extract sensitive information or gain access to restricted accounts.

Rubio’s office has issued a warning to State Department personnel, advising heightened caution and urging staff to verify communications that appear to come from senior officials.

“This is a new frontier in deception,” a senior U.S. official familiar with the investigation said. “The risk to national security is real when trusted voices can be so easily replicated.”

The case underscores the growing threat of AI-powered misinformation and impersonation in government and diplomatic affairs. Experts have warned that such technologies—when used maliciously—could destabilise communications, erode trust, and compromise critical decision-making processes.

Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any information was compromised during the incident, and investigations are still underway to determine the origin and scope of the attack.

The State Department has yet to release further details but maintains that measures are being taken to prevent future breaches using similar AI-driven tactics.
