Cameroon have lifted the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy for the first time after defeating Malawi 3-0 in Sunday’s final in Rabat.

The Indomitable Lionesses produced a commanding first-half performance, scoring all three goals before the interval to bring Malawi’s impressive debut campaign to an end.

Marie Ngah Manga struck twice for Cameroon, while Naomi Eto scored with an acrobatic scissors kick to put her side firmly in control.

Malawi created some early opportunities, with Temwa Chawinga and Chikondi Gondwe testing Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina, but they were unable to convert their chances.

Cameroon broke the deadlock in the 20th minute after Malawi goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo struggled to deal with Grace Mendoua’s cross. The ball came off the crossbar, allowing Ngah Manga to head home from close range.

Eto doubled the advantage from a corner, connecting with Achta Toko Njoya’s delivery to score with an impressive scissors kick.

Cameroon added a third in first-half stoppage time after Eto rounded Sikelo and supplied Ngah Manga, who finished to complete her brace.

Malawi showed more attacking intent after the break, with Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga both threatening, but Cameroon maintained control of the contest.

Ngah Manga had an opportunity to complete a hat-trick but fired into the side netting after beating the goalkeeper.

Veteran Gabrielle Onguene appeared to score a fourth late in the game, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

The 3-0 victory handed Cameroon their maiden WAFCON title after three previous defeats in the final, while Malawi ended their historic first appearance at the tournament as runners-up.
