President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election for another four-year term, urging him to bring residents together following a keenly contested governorship election.

Tinubu spoke with Adeleke by telephone after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the Accord Party candidate winner of Saturday’s election.

The President said the outcome reflected the choice of the electorate and demonstrated the continued growth of democracy in Nigeria. He also commended other candidates for their participation and praised INEC and security agencies for the conduct of the poll.

Adeleke secured 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 444,815 votes. African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salaam finished third with 17,180 votes.

Adeleke won 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured 11.

Following his victory, Adeleke appealed for peace and reconciliation across Osun, urging supporters to avoid retaliatory attacks after weeks of political tension.

The governor promised to build on the achievements of his first term, address shortcomings and accelerate development under his administration’s five-point agenda.

Meanwhile, the Osun State chapter of the APC says it is reviewing the election results and alleged irregularities before deciding whether to seek redress through available legal channels.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described the election as an indication of what could happen in the 2027 general election, while House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas said the outcome demonstrated that opposition parties could win elections under the Tinubu administration.

Aminu Tambuwal and Peter Obi also congratulated Adeleke, describing the result as a victory for democracy and the right of citizens to determine their leaders through the ballot.
