Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated a Mid-Level Agro Produce Hub at Pen Cinema in Agege as part of measures to improve food distribution and strengthen food security across the state.
The facility, which occupies about 7,000 square metres, includes a 4,000-square-metre trading area capable of accommodating up to 400 vendors. It also provides 800 metric tonnes of dry storage capacity and 300 metric tonnes of cold storage.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said the project is designed to reduce post-harvest losses and make the movement of food from producers to consumers more efficient.
He noted that more than 70 per cent of food consumed in Lagos is sourced from outside the state, a situation that contributes to higher transportation costs, supply challenges and fluctuations in food prices.
The governor also disclosed that work on the Lagos Central Food Systems and Logistics Hub at Ketu Ereyun in Epe is at an advanced stage and is expected to be completed before the end of his administration.
According to him, the newly commissioned Agege Fresh Food Hub is projected to facilitate food transactions valued at more than ₦5 billion annually.
Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, said the facilities will operate through a hub-and-spoke system connecting farmers, aggregators and processors directly with retailers and consumers.
She added that the arrangement is expected to minimise food losses, improve logistics and provide traders with safer, cleaner and better-organised environments for their businesses.
