Former Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová has been handed a four-year ban from professional tennis after refusing to undergo a doping test.

The sanction was imposed by an independent tribunal, which ruled that the player violated anti-doping regulations by declining to provide a sample during an out-of-competition test in December 2025.

According to the ruling, a Doping Control Officer attempted to conduct the test at about 8 p.m. on December 3, 2025, but Vondroušová refused to comply with the request.

The tribunal imposed the maximum available sanction despite the player’s argument that she was suffering from an acute stress reaction that affected her judgement at the time of the incident.

Vondroušová, who previously won the Wimbledon singles title and rose to world number six in the rankings, retains the right to appeal the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The ruling has generated reactions within the tennis community, with the Professional Tennis Players Association calling for greater player involvement in the development and administration of anti-doping policies.

The association argued that athletes should have a stronger voice in decisions relating to testing procedures and regulations.

The four-year suspension represents a significant setback for the Czech player and effectively sidelines her from professional competition for the duration of the ban unless a successful appeal is lodged.

Further developments are expected as the player considers her legal options regarding the tribunal’s decision.
