A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, in Kuje Correctional Centre.

Justice Mohammed Umar gave the order pending the hearing and determination of a motion seeking a stay of execution of the court’s earlier decision revoking Sowore’s bail and issuing a bench warrant for his arrest.

The court also dismissed an application filed by Sowore seeking the recusal of the trial judge on grounds of alleged bias.

Following the ruling, Justice Umar adjourned the matter to June 24 for the hearing of the application for stay of execution.

The motion was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN.

The court had earlier revoked Sowore’s bail on June 16 after he failed to appear for trial.

Justice Umar also granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), ordering the issuance of a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Tinubu by describing him as “a criminal” in posts published on his social media accounts.

The case is expected to continue on June 24 when the court will hear arguments on the application seeking a stay of the orders revoking Sowore’s bail and directing his arrest.
