Lawmakers move to address public concerns over telecom service pricing

ABUJA — The Nigerian Senate has initiated a probe into recent increases in data service costs, mandating its Communications Committee to investigate the pricing structure and propose solutions for a more sustainable telecommunications sector. The decision followed a motion by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong highlighting the financial burden on Nigerians, particularly youth who depend on affordable internet for livelihoods.

During Wednesday’s plenary session presided by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, lawmakers unanimously approved measures including:

  • Immediate engagement between telecom providers and the Federal Ministry of Communications
  • Development of policy framework for affordable internet services
  • Comprehensive review of current data pricing models

Senator Ekpenyong emphasized that “the recent price hikes disproportionately affect millions of citizens in an increasingly digital economy.” The resolution directs relevant stakeholders to ensure pricing remains fair while maintaining sector viability.
