Jonathan Makes History as First African to Win Prestigious Sunhak Peace Prize

Date:

Abuja, Nigeria – Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been named recipient of the 2025 Founders Sunhak Peace Award, becoming the first African leader to receive this distinguished honor.

The announcement was made Monday by Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, Special Adviser to Dr. Jonathan, who revealed the former president will receive the award at a ceremony in Seoul, South Korea on April 11.

Dr. Jonathan joins an elite group of global leaders as only the third individual to win this category of the award, following former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The Sunhak Peace Prize Committee cited Jonathan’s tireless peacebuilding efforts across Africa through his leadership of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, West African Elders’ Forum, and International Summit Council for Peace.

The biennial Sunhak awards recognize outstanding contributions to global peace and development. Past laureates of the organization’s main prize include:

  • Former Senegalese President Macky Sall
  • AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina
  • Oxford vaccine co-developer Dame Sarah Gilbert
  • GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance

The April 11 award presentation in Seoul will mark the sixth edition of the prestigious event, where Dr. Jonathan will be honored alongside other distinguished peace advocates.
