A Christmas procession in Gombe State took a tragic turn on Wednesday when a commercial bus lost control and injured 22 celebrants.
The incident occurred near IMAN Restaurant on Bauchi Road at approximately 2 pm.
The procession, which involved Christian faithful from Tumfure community heading to the Government House and the Emir’s Palace for Christmas homage, was disrupted when the bus, allegedly experiencing brake failure, ran into the crowd.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident triggered outrage, with an angry mob attacking the bus driver, who managed to escape. His vehicle, loaded with rice and grains, was destroyed and set ablaze by the crowd.
The spokesperson for the Gombe State Police Command, Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed the incident and noted that all injured victims were transported to the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe and the Specialist Hospital for treatment. He clarified that no deaths were recorded and assured the public that investigations were underway.
The state’s Commissioner of Police has directed the Command’s Motor Traffic Department (MTD) to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, Security personnel, including police officers, soldiers, and FRSC officials cordoned off the accident site, while efforts were made to restore calm in collaboration with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Governor Inuwa Yahaya sympathized with the victims and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state. During a meeting with CAN leaders at the Government House, the governor assured them that the state government would cover the medical expenses of the injured, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to the welfare of all residents.
Authorities continue to work with community leaders to ensure calm and prevent further incidents.
