President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the commitment of ECOWAS to the welfare and interests of citizens in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, reaffirming that wisdom and diplomacy will guide efforts to reintegrate the three countries into the regional body.
Speaking in Abuja during a state visit by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Tinubu, who chairs ECOWAS, expressed concerns over the lack of clear transition timelines from the military leadership of the three nations.
“Our relationship of mutual respect will continue as we reappraise the situation in these countries. We will not tolerate unconstitutional governments, and we will explore diplomatic solutions to avoid punishing innocent citizens who are not in possession of power,” Tinubu said, according to his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu assured that ECOWAS would maintain free movement and trade while leaving the door open for the return of democratic governance.
In response, President Steinmeier stressed the importance of regional cooperation, highlighting the economic and security implications of excluding Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. He urged ECOWAS to continue its diplomatic approach while preparing contingency plans for future economic partnerships.
“Reintegration will positively impact the region. It is crucial to use diplomacy to encourage these nations to reconsider their position,” Steinmeier remarked.
The discussions reinforced the shared vision of Nigeria and Germany for regional stability and economic growth through collaboration and inclusive governance.
