The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Obada Grammar School, Idi-Emi, following the death of Monday Arijo, an SS2 student, reportedly due to corporal punishment.
The teacher allegedly responsible for the incident has been arrested and suspended, while the school’s principal, Tamrat Onaolapo, has also been suspended for permitting corporal punishment in violation of the state’s regulations.
Governor Dapo Abiodun directed the school’s closure and announced the formation of an investigative panel to thoroughly examine the circumstances leading to the student’s death.
He assured that any individuals found liable by the investigation will face appropriate legal consequences.
Representatives from the state government, including the Director of the Secondary and Higher Education Department, Principals General of the Egba and Yewa Divisions, and the Zonal Education Officer of Imeko Afon, visited the bereaved family to offer condolences and gather information to aid the investigation.
Officials from ANCOPPS, the Ogun State President of the Trade Union Congress, and the Ogun State Chairman of ASSUS were also present.
During the visit, the officials expressed their condolences and pledged the government’s support to the family during this difficult time. A condolence letter and a cash support of ₦500,000 were provided to the family representative as a gesture of sympathy.
The state government emphasized its commitment to a full investigation and to ensuring accountability for those involved in the incident.
