SENATE ORDERS STATE, LOCAL GOVTS TO COMPLY WITH SUPREME COURT JUDGEMENT

Date:

The Nigerian Senate has called for swift compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government funding, stressing the importance of financial autonomy for local administrations. The resolution followed a debate on the Senate floor on Wednesday, led by Tony Nwoye, the senator representing Anambra North.

During his presentation, Senator Nwoye voiced concerns over attempts by some state governors to introduce laws aimed at illegally controlling local government funds, despite the Supreme Court’s clear stance on financial independence for these administrations.

Several lawmakers, including Senators Osita Izunaso and Adamu Aliero, echoed Nwoye’s concerns, highlighting the need for strict adherence to judicial rulings to ensure transparency and accountability in local governance.

In response, Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured that the National Assembly will take prompt action to amend relevant sections of the Constitution, paving the way for full autonomy for local governments across Nigeria.

The Senate also criticized state governments for using their state Houses of Assembly to pass laws that contravene constitutional provisions and ignore the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government financial autonomy.
