The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two women, Ujunwa Una, and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for allegedly attempting to sell newborn twins.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a statement shared on his X handle (@BenHundeyin) on Friday.
According to Hundeyin, the suspects were apprehended following a tip-off from a concerned citizen. The arrest took place on September 9 at Berger bus-stop, a major entry point into Lagos State, by patrol officers from the Ojodu Division.
“The suspects were found with two newborn baby girls, approximately six days old, while traveling from Abia State,” the police spokesperson revealed. “Investigations showed that the women were en route to deliver the babies to a nurse in Lagos State, with whom the mother of the infants had promised to connect them only after their arrival.”
During questioning, the suspects confessed that they were paid ₦150,000 to transport the babies to Lagos. They further explained that the mother of the twins had sold them due to her inability to care for them.
Following their arrest, the case was transferred to the Gender Unit of the Lagos Command. The newborns have since been placed in a motherless babies’ home for proper care and medical evaluation.
The police are continuing their investigation to apprehend other conspirators involved in the case, while the arrested suspects were arraigned on Thursday.
