The Nigerian government will mark President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office with a “low-key” official ceremony, as announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris.
Mr. Idris made this announcement on Wednesday during a ministerial press briefing held at Radio House in Abuja.
It remains uncertain if the celebration will take place on June 12, which is recognized as Democracy Day.
Democracy Day, originally celebrated on May 29, was moved to June 12 by President Buhari to honor the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election. Election data indicated that Moshood Abiola won, but he was never officially declared the winner or sworn into office by the military government led by Ibrahim Babangida.
President Tinubu, a staunch supporter of Mr. Abiola, is credited with playing a significant role in changing Democracy Day to June 12.
Outlining the plans for the anniversary, Mr. Idris said the celebration would focus on sectoral briefings rather than traditional festivities.
“The anniversary will be low-key, with no major ceremony, but there will be sectorial briefings by the ministers,” the minister explained. “The aim is to ensure government funds are preserved for the people.”
He added that the briefings will cover eight key sectors of the government, with different ministers providing updates on their respective areas. These ministerial briefings will occur daily.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, also confirmed that the celebration would be understated.
