Nigerian Senate has passed for second reading, a bill that would provide for the documentation and protection of domestic workers and employers of domestic workers across the country.
This followed the Presentation of the lead Debate by the Sponsor of the Bill Senator Hussaini Babangida during yesterday’s Plenary.
The Lawmaker, while leading the Debate on the general principles of the Bill, said most domestic workers in the country were either unregistered or not engaged in compliance with labour laws.
Some other Lawmakers supported the Bill saying it was timely considering the spate of abuse of domestic workers and attacks by them on their employers.
In his ruling, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio referred the Bill to the Senate Committee on Labour and Productivity giving four weeks to report back in Plenary for further legislative input.
The Bill, if passed by the National Assembly and assented to by President Bola Tinubu, will nip in the bud, cases of assault and abuse of domestic workers in Nigeria.
