Thirty-five members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, who support the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, have arrived at the Lagos State High Court for the hearing of a case filed by Obasa challenging his removal.
Recall that Obasa was removed from his position on January 13, 2025, by at least 36 lawmakers while he was out of the country. In an application dated February 12, 2025, and filed by his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), Obasa contested the legality of his removal.
The lawmakers, represented by a team of senior advocates including Prof. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), Mr. Olu Daramola (SAN), Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), and others, are prepared to defend their decision in court. At the time of filing this report, the lawmakers had taken their seats in preparation for the hearing.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly has condemned what it described as an “unsanctioned attempt” by former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and three members to convene a plenary session on Thursday. In a statement issued by the media office of the current Speaker, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, the House clarified that the purported session did not meet procedural requirements, such as a formal notice to all members, a quorum, an approved agenda, or the presence of the mace—a symbol of legislative authority.
“Only 5 out of 40 members were present, rendering the session unconstitutional and without legislative effect,” the statement read.
The House reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the integrity of the legislature and maintaining the highest parliamentary standards. It also expressed unwavering support for Speaker Mojisola Meranda, dismissing rumors of her resignation as unfounded.
“As an institution dedicated to the progress and development of Lagos State, we shall continue to act within the confines of the law to protect and preserve democratic governance,” the statement added.
The House also aligned itself with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in resolving misunderstandings and reiterated its commitment to working in the interest of Lagosians.
