VP Shettima announces proactive measures at disaster prevention workshop in Abuja
Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that approximately 15 million Nigerians are at significant risk of flooding in 2025, with the potential to wipe out 5% of the nation’s GDP. The disclosure came during Wednesday’s validation workshop on Nigeria’s Anticipatory Action Framework at the National Counter Terrorism Centre in Abuja.
President Bola Tinubu has approved N15 billion for emergency flood response, shifting from reactive to proactive disaster management. The funding follows last week’s warning by the Federal Government about impending heavy rains and floods across 30 states and the FCT, including high-risk areas like Bayelsa, Rivers, and Kogi states.
Shettima emphasized inter-agency collaboration while drawing parallels to Plateau State’s security crisis: “There can never be a military solution to the crisis in Plateau or Northeast.” The VP’s remarks come as Water Resources Minister Joseph Utsev warns of coastal flooding in the South-South due to rising sea levels.
