Legendary wrestler and pop culture icon Hulk Hogan has died at the age of 71, according to reports from NBC News and TMZ.
Hogan, born Terry Bollea, passed away at his Florida residence, with sources citing a cardiac arrest. His manager, Chris Volo, confirmed the news to NBC. Emergency personnel were reportedly dispatched to the scene.
Standing at 6’7″ with his trademark blond handlebar mustache and ever-present bandana, Hogan became the face of professional wrestling in the 1980s. His larger-than-life persona and slogan “Hulkamania” helped propel the then-World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) into global mainstream success.
“WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s,” the company posted on social media. “WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and fans.”
Hogan made his wrestling debut in 1979 but rose to stardom in the mid-1980s, becoming a household name alongside wrestling legends like Andre the Giant and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Beyond the ring, he appeared in films such as Rocky III and No Holds Barred, and made television appearances including Baywatch.
Inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005, Hogan’s legacy in sports entertainment was not without controversy. In 2015, he was dismissed from WWE following the release of a recording in which he used racist language. He later apologized and was reinstated to the Hall of Fame.
In his later years, Hogan remained active in public life and was a vocal supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump. He made headlines in 2024 after appearing at the Republican National Convention, where he endorsed Trump with his signature theatrics.
Hogan had endured numerous health issues in recent years due to the physical toll of wrestling. He was married three times and had two children with his first wife, Linda.
Further details regarding his death and funeral arrangements are expected in the coming days.
