A Magistrate Court sitting in Kuje, Abuja, has granted bail to human rights activist and SaharaReporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, along with several protesters arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration in the Federal Capital Territory.
Also granted bail were Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, among others.
Presiding Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’I’d issued the order on Friday after the defendants were arraigned on charges of unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace.
According to the ruling, each defendant was granted bail in the sum of ₦500,000, with conditions that include the presentation of a verified National Identification Number (NIN), a three-year tax clearance certificate, and the submission of their passports.
Sowore was arrested on Thursday by armed police officers shortly after leaving the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he had attended proceedings for Nnamdi Kanu. His arrest, which was captured in videos widely shared online, sparked condemnation from civil society organisations and human rights groups, who accused authorities of attempting to suppress dissent and silence activism.
