Senate Passes Nigeria Start-up, Electricity, Social Security Commission Bills

Date:

Lawmakers passed three bills on Wednesday at a plenary in the Senate chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja.

The proposed bills are the Nigeria Start-up Bill, the Electricity Bill, and the National Social Security Commission (Establishment) Bill.

During the session, Senator Yakubu Oseni, Chairman of the Committee on ICT and Cybercrime, suggested that the Senate receive and consider the report on the Nigeria Start-up Bill.

The bill seeks to cater to the establishment of the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The senator told lawmakers that when implemented, the council would create an enabling environment for the technology-enabled start-ups in the country.

Another senator in the plenary, Senator Gabriel Suswam, on the other hand, proposed that the senate should receive and consider the report of the Committee on Power on the Electricity Bill.

The lawmakers presented the report on the piece of legislation. The bill was then read the third time and passed by the Senate.

The National Social Security Commission (Establishment) Bill was also passed by lawmakers after it passed the third reading.

Senator Oker-Jerv Emmanuel, speaking on behalf of Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, moved for the receipt and consideration of the report by the lawmakers.
