Regional group calls commission’s creation “historic,” urges swift implementation

ABUJA — The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has applauded President Bola Tinubu for signing the South-South Development Commission (SSDC) Bill into law, calling it a landmark move for the oil-rich region’s progress.

In a statement released Tuesday by PANDEF’s National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Boladei Igali, the group described the commission as critical for addressing the Niger Delta’s “unique social, environmental, and developmental challenges.” The forum credited both the presidency and National Assembly for fast-tracking the legislation.

“This demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to equitable development,” PANDEF stated, noting the region’s decades-long contributions to Nigeria’s economy through oil and gas production. The group urged Tinubu to appoint qualified leaders to helm the commission, emphasizing the need for collaboration with state governments on infrastructure and environmental restoration.

Beyond the SSDC, PANDEF pressed for immediate action on oil pollution cleanup and road projects. It also appealed for presidential intervention in Rivers State’s political crisis, seeking the reinstatement of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other officials.

The forum pledged continued partnership with federal authorities to ensure stability in the South-South, where underdevelopment has fueled unrest. Analysts view the commission as a potential game-changer if adequately funded and insulated from political interference.
