Nigerian Woman Shot Dead By 12-year-old Son In US

Date:

A 12-year-old boy has confessed to accidentally shooting his mother, a Nigerian woman, after initially claiming an intruder killed her in Forestdale, Alabama, United States.

It was reported that the teenager had accidentally discharged a firearm which struck and killed his 29-year-old mom on Monday.

Ayobiyi Cook, a 29-year-old registered nurse who friends called ‘Yo-Yo’, was found dead in the family’s Forestdale, Alabama home, on August 6.

Her son had originally told police that an intruder had entered their house, shot his mother and then ran away.

“The child originally fabricated a story that detectives determined was not possible, but the child eventually gave a true account of what happened,” Deputy Chief David Agee said

“After investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives were able to determine that the victim’s 12-year-old son unintentionally discharged a firearm striking his mother causing her death.

“After more probing, the boy finally changed his story.

“The child eventually gave a true account of what happened,” Agee said.

“Evidence on the scene supports that the shooting was unintentional and the offense will be addressed through the Family Court system. The family has been cooperative throughout the process and the child will remain with them.”

In an earlier press statement, the deputies stated that there had been no forced entry into the home when they arrived at the scene but a man was seen fleeing the home shortly before a call was made to 911.

“On Saturday, August 6, 2022, at 12:10 am, Jefferson County Deputies received a 911 call for help at a residence in the 2400 block of Freemont Avenue in the Forestdale community.  Deputies arrived and found a 29-year-old woman deceased on the scene. There appeared to be no forced entry into the home and a man was seen fleeing from the residence shortly before the 911 call was made. Sheriff’s detectives were able to recover evidence on the scene and are continuing to investigate,” the statement reads.

The boy’s father is an officer with the Birmingham Police Department and was working at the time of the shooting, according to Birmingham Real-Time News.

The funeral for the slain mom will be held on August 12 at the Faith Memorial Chapel in Bessmer, Alabama.
