Nigeria emerged the overall winner at the just-concluded 11th Africa Armwrestling Championships on Friday in Lagos.
The Nigerian teams won a total of 27 gold medals, 27 silver, and 22 bronze medals at the three-day championship held at the Indoor Sports Hall of National Stadium, Surulere.
The Nigerian teams put out an outstanding performance with at least 45 armwrestlers competing in the competition. It was arguably their best in the competition’s history.
The Egyptians came second with 24 gold medals, after fielding only six armwrestlers.
Ghana finished third with 18 gold medals, 22 silver, and five bronze medals.
12 countries participated in this year’s Africa Armwrestling Championships which kicked off on July 19 and concluded July 22.
Charles Asibey, President of Africa Armwrestling Federation, in an interview with NAN, said the competition was a success and lived up to expectations.
“Only five countries participated when Nigeria last hosted but we now have 12 countries showing that the sport has grown tremendously,” he said.
“This is a big development and we are so proud that the sport is now gradually lifting from the ground and gaining good acceptance.
“Armwrestling is a great sport with good techniques and it takes a lot of hard work and tactics to achieve set objectives.”
