Nigeria Labour Congress Defies Government Appeal, Vows to Continue Protest Amid Safety Concerns

Date:

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning, threatening a nationwide shutdown if any of its members face attacks during the upcoming two-day protest starting tomorrow February 27, 2024.

In a statement released on Sunday by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the Labour Union affirmed its commitment to the planned industrial action.

The NLC emphasised the urgent need for the federal government to honour its agreements with Organised Labour and address the escalating economic challenges facing Nigeria.

Despite government pressure to reconsider, the NLC remains resolute, asserting that its members will not be intimidated into abandoning their planned nationwide protest.

Meanwhile, Sixty-five Civil Society Organisations have pulled out of the planned nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress saying the strike might stir up anarchy and cause more hardship on citizens.

The Coalition, in a statement jointly signed by the Coordinator and Secretary, Buba Ibrahim Mohammed and Comrade George Phillips, insisted that the strike action will only stir up civil unrest and further worsen the already bad security situation as well as damage the fragile economy.
