Niger Delta Youths Disown Anti-NDDC Protest, Warn Against Destabilization

Date:

The Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum (NDENYLF) has distanced itself from any planned protest against the management of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), warning against attempts to disrupt peace and development in the region.

Reports had indicated that some youths, dissatisfied with the NDDC’s programs, were planning a protest against its leadership. However, NDENYLF spokesman Comrade Legborsi Yamaabana, speaking in Port Harcourt on Thursday, dismissed the proposed protest as being driven by external interests aimed at undermining the commission’s efforts.

“We are aware of recent attempts by faceless groups, sponsored by selfish interests, to target the current Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku,” Yamaabana said. “While we do not take a partisan stance, we strongly believe these actions are meant to disrupt peace, incite crisis, and hinder development in the Niger Delta. We commend Dr. Ogbuku’s leadership for promoting transparency, accountability, and infrastructural development.”

Yamaabana highlighted that under Ogbuku’s leadership, the NDDC has adopted an open-door policy, which has significantly reduced protests and fostered better engagement with stakeholders.

He also reaffirmed that Ogbuku’s tenure remains valid, as confirmed by the Minister for the Development of the Niger Delta, Mr. Abubakar Momoh. Yamaabana called on security agencies to remain vigilant and take action against groups attempting to destabilize the region under false pretenses.

“The stability and prosperity of our communities are paramount, and we will not tolerate any actions that compromise these values,” he added.

NDENYLF, which represents all ethnic groups in the Niger Delta, emphasized its role as the highest decision-making body for youth and civil society in the region. The forum reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, development, and progress in the Niger Delta.
