Manchester City Fight Back to Win 2021/2022 Premier League Title

Date:

Manchester City clinched the Premier League title after a hard-fought battle with Aston Villa on the last day of the season at Etihad, consequently taking their Premier League tally to six.

Goals from Cash and former Liverpool ace Coutinho, put the visitors in charge with a two-goal advantage up until the 76th minute before the host produced a stunning comeback with Ilkay Gundogan, who came off the bench, and Rodri scoring three goals in five minutes to give the host dominance, creating scenes reminiscent of their remarkable final-day comeback against QPR eleven years ago when Sergio Aguero netted a 93-minute winner to hand City their first-ever Premier League title.

Gundogan began the comeback with a beautiful header from Raheem Sterling’s cross at the back post, Rodri followed suit by side-footing home from outside the 18-yard-box, and Gundogan emerged again on the score sheet when he tapped home Kevin De Bruyne’s cross at the 81st minute to complete the comeback that saw City fans roaring with unbridled delight.

In an interview before the game, Pep Guardiola said he wouldn’t want a repeat of the dramatic comeback eleven years ago. But the Spaniard’s joy knew no bounds when his side fought back to hand him the 10th league title of his coaching career, dashing the hopes of newly-found rivals Liverpool who were counting on Aston Villa to produce an upset against City.

It was beautiful chaos at the final blast of the referee’s whistle as the City fans thronged the pitch to celebrate their win that now places them second in the teams with the most Premier League titles, in-between neighbours Manchester United who have 13 titles, and Chelsea with five.
