Veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing the party’s alleged takeover by “anti-democratic forces.”
In a resignation letter dated July 17, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward 4 Chairman in Ihievbe, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, Momodu said the party had lost its foundational values and was no longer a viable platform for democratic engagement.
“My reason is simple and straightforward. Our party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight,” Momodu stated. “It is, therefore, honourable to abandon the carcass of the party to them while the majority of us earnestly sign up with the new coalition party known as the African Democratic Congress (ADC).”
Momodu’s exit comes just days after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also dumped the PDP for the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Momodu, a former PDP presidential aspirant, confirmed that he would join a broader opposition coalition forming under the ADC banner to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
In a recent television interview, he accused the Tinubu administration of worsening Nigeria’s economic and political conditions, comparing it unfavorably to that of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He also accused Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of being a mole planted by the APC within the PDP.
“Without any doubt, people are leaving the carcass of PDP to Wike and his cronies, that’s all. It was a prophecy foretold,” Momodu said.
He alleged that the APC has been deliberately infiltrating opposition parties to weaken electoral competition ahead of 2027, warning that “the ruling party does not want competition.”
Momodu’s defection is the latest in a wave of high-profile exits from the PDP, signaling further fragmentation within Nigeria’s main opposition party.
